19-2 Coke Grips

This is my 19-2. Grips are original. I'd say yours are too.;)

Can I have that? Please!!!!

I believe some N-frame coke bottle stocks have been modified to fit a K-frame.

Bill
I've owned three pair of Coke that were modified to fit a K frame. I still have two of them.

Here's photos of a couple:

Cokes weren't recognized as something special 30+ years ago. The modification is rather simple and only required removing a little backstrap wood from the escutcheons to the tip of the horns. If the previous owners knew how much value they flushed down the tubes, they'd roll over in their graves. :(

I suppose if K-frame deluxe targets (aka Cokes) really existed they would look something like this:

Compare them to the standard factory K-frame diamond targets on the left:

When the target stocks on the right first left the factory they were smooth . . . and were custom checkered for a previous owner by the master himself, Keith Brown

My 19 (no dash) with diamond targets.

I suppose they're the original grips that came on the gun. They seem to be a bit thinner than most of the later target grips I've handled, and seem to fit my hand better, but that may just be my imagination.

CajunBass,

I agree with you. It seems as time went by the grips became less oval shaped and to more squarish almost feeling like a 2x4.

The SCSW is incorrect in that statement.

Bill

I believe they "are" correct , but would have agreed with you just two weeks ago until...

I bought a pair of K diamond targets at a gun show not noticing anything unusual until I got them home and laid them next to another pair of K diamond targets and saw that the checking pattern was much larger like the N cokes have.
Then I turned them and saw the palm swell - HOLLY COW! K cokes!

The next thing one would tell me is that they must be N cokes that were made to fit a K frame. NOPE

These sure look to have the original finish on them and show no signs front or back of a reshaping or refinish. The football is correct size and nothing looks to have been altered.

N cokes altered as drastically as they would have to be altered to fit a K frame would be "extremely" noticeable.

I am now a believer of K cokes. Here they are on a 17-2

To my old eyes, those do look chopped. ;)

the checkering pattern is the same as your diamond targets on the right; the stocks on the gun have been shortened on the butt.

OK, Im offended and disappointed that the previous posts are not using correct terminology. The grips have checking, not that other word.
We have covered this issue. My best and Happy Easter, Mike 2796

K Cokes

Upon closer inspection I see that 410 bore is correct about the grips being cut short - BUT - the checking is different!

First - notice the rounded corners are tighter on the "coke" grips:)

Second - The checking on them is 1/16" wider and a full 1/8" taller as well as having the tighter corners than the standard K targets on the right.

This larger checking area is what led me to believe these are "coke" grips. Someone please explain "that" because I'd like to learn.

In the wood department at S&W, there were machines that were run by an Operator (a Human).
There were MANY adjustments made to this equipment and many different operators making these grips.
There are many variances over the years with service, magna, and target stocks that we have seen and documented.
There should be NO surprise that we are discussing the variances years later as collectors.
Another vote from me that there is no such thing as K cokes:)

Potato, patato, tomato, tamato. Who gives a rats patooti.:):)
Anyone who cares to correct my spelling may do so. I won't care or give a rats patooti. So there.

No matter what stocks you have on that 19, they are really nice six-guns. Easy to pack, accurate, & powerful. When you get it to the range I'd sure like to hear a range report.
Congratulations.

From a rest pretty much a one holer. Off hand from 10yrds, way better than this old man.

You forgot the "e" on tomato. Rats " patooti". Paul, pretty risque language for the Forum. Oh yea, the stocks are checked.
