Hate to do this to you fellas but, want to know a general good value of the following.

19-3 blued 4". Has wood stocks (not sure if they're original) The finish looks very good...maybe 95% plus. Price is $515 w/tax included

28-2 blued 6" rubber stocks. The finish is just as good, if not slightly better than the 19. Price is $488 w/tax included

No box of papers for either.

Prices decent?

Those prices are about what's expected. Maybe a little high in my area if it's an individual. Gun stores might even be a little higher, depending on which one it is.

:) Both of those prices sound pretty good to me. I would offer a little less for them. If you are going to buy both of them you could offer $800 for the pair. Some time people will go for that. It doesn't hurt to ask. Don

That's almost exactly what I paid for my last 19-3

and 28-2.

However - I would tell them to take at least $80 off the price of any gun which does not have wood grips, preferably original. When I see rubber, I demand a reduction.

Model 19s, especially pinned and recessed ones, always go for more than M-28s. I still like 28s better...

Hi,

I bought a early M28-2 4 inch pin and recessed for $595.00. No box but original grips. I would rate this revolver at 85%. I bought this over one just like it that looked better. But the trigger was better on the one I bought. I wanted a shooter not a safe queen. I don't have a M19 but I bought two M66-4 4 inch barrels. One cost me $618.00 and the second one cost $300.00. Now I live in California and the prices can very quite a bit. I would say the price on the ones you mentioned sounds fair. They are bought excellent revolvers and I have found very few people that have ever regreted buying either one. Good luck.

I paid 600 for my 19-3 in the box. I felt it was a fair price but not a steal. I have yet to purchase a 28 YET...

I think these are fair prices, perhaps slightly high in the current market/economy. If you are patient and look frequently online I think you could find them for less...but buy one or both of these if you can't live without them :)

At those prices I'd buy both! Prices like that are nowhere to be found in my neck of the woods. When I read the prices some have paid for nice S$Ws I feel as if I'm living on another planet.

a guy at a gun store in Ft Worth was asking 595 for a 4" nickle. I would say it was an 85-90 gun but had engravings under the grip indicating it was or had been a cop gun. It had a bit of rust around the trademark. Overall the grips had some kind of laquer or clear coat....I offered 475 he countered with 525 and I would not go any higher. so i bought a 15-3 and a Polish P-64 for what it would cost for the 19...besides I have a 19-3 that looks brand new.....hope that helps

*** Update ***

Well, after thinking it over and doing some poking around online, I happened upon a local guy selling a 6" 28-2. Took a look at it today and was told he never fired it (I certainly believe him) He purchased it "used" in 1983 and it sat in his safe since then. The finish is near 98% with the ever so hint of wear at the muzzle, and a very fine turn line. I bought it and put on an extra set of wood stocks I had lying around since it came with rubber pachmayr's.

It's a very good looking wheel gun, that's for sure. I can't wait to shoot it. He wanted $400 for it and I thought that was a fair price.

Can someone be kind enough to date it for me? N2028xx
Also, what stocks should it have come with?

I'm posting this on an older computer and the pic looks dark to me. I lightened up the pic a bit. Let me know which picture looks better. **Edit to add** I removed the "lightened pic" based on opinions. Thanks

About 1974-75. Nice looking M28. I just got a 6" and it had football targets on it but I don't know if that's what it left the factory with.

I picked up my M28 for $344. It's got some holster wear, but given what I have been seeing similar guns for, I couldn't pass it up.

I agree about the rubber grips , but I can never keep a poker face , and I am not leaving without them . It will not hurt to ask , I know some some worse than hoss thief types that pull the extra nice original grips off and maybe his conscience will get to him . These guns if the condition is as presented would be a good buy IMHO . When the gun is right for you , you must strike . I have never gotten a second chance at a good buy .

I bought new model 28 in about 1974 for 156.00 or something close to it . It had magnas . The Highway Patrol in my state carried 27s with magnas and Tyler T additions so I tried one , not bad at all .

Dregg;

The second photo came out better, I think. It may have come with Magna or "football" cutout target stocks, no way to tell short of a factory letter. Glad to see you did a little more shopping, $400 is a pretty good price for this one.

Do my eyes deceive me or is that a target trigger?

$400 has to be a decent price. The bottom picture is much better. The top one looks all washed out.

Jack,

Yes, it does have a wider target trigger. Apparently whatever happened to this revolver, was done before 1983. The gentleman who owned it simply stored it since. He showed me a few other pieces he had and they too looked as if they sat for years. I have no reason to doubt the fella.

Very interesting. Is the trigger smooth?

The SCS&W says this about the triggers that were originally available on this model:
... .265" serrated trigger or .400 smooth trigger ...

In my limited experience, I have never seen an HP with anything but a .265" serrated trigger. It looks like that trigger may well have been on it when it left the factory.

Jack,

Thanks for the info. The trigger is serrated. I'm not sure how this gun came from S&W. Perhaps I should get a letter?
