my son in law inherited a model 19-4 6 inch 357 in nickel plate. he says the serial number is 54k4573. not sure about that.is it a desirable gun? when was it born? thanks in advance.

His 19-4 was shipped in 1978 or possibly early 1979. Not rare, they made a lot of -4s. 4" are more desirable. I recently bought a pristine 4" one for $425, which is on the low side.
 
6" 19s are very desirable. I have a blue 6" 19-3 which is a very good shooter. I shoot mainly .38 Specials and load them light. Not a lot more recoil than a .22. They will take a lot of .357, but the common wisdom is to stay away from 125 gr hot loads. 140 gr and above are preferred. I load 158 gr for any .357 shooting.
