1905 4th change

I just picked up from a local pawn shop what I believe is a 1905 hand ejector 4th change. It needs tender loving care to bring back its beauty, but that I can handle.Serial number is 361695 can anyone give me approximate date of manufacture? it has a 4 inch barrel and someone replaced the yoke and cylinder with a newer part. I'll clean it and probably reblue it to make it look nice. it has the small S&W emblem on it, no made in the USA mark, the stocks do not have s&w emblems on them. I'll post some before and after pics when i figure out how. thanks in advance.

The serial places it likely in later 1920. No MADE IN USA yet (prior to 1922), and non-medallion stocks with round wooden tops would be correct as these started that year (for all of the 1920s).

I had one with a close serial number that was manufactured in 1917. I'll have to get back to you with the exact serial number, but I'm fairly certain it was close to yours.

I have two as follows:

SN: 373350 which I have been told was mfgd. approximately March 1921. It has a 6" barrel, and I purchased it in Georgia.

SN: 577063 which letters to a shipment on November 19, 1929 to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It has a 5" barrel.

The closest I have seen to yours is s/n 3608xx. It shipped 12/20.

Re SN 361695

On my list, I show SN 360812 as shipping in 12/20 and SN 364322 as shipping in 1/21. Actually, S&W would have called yours the Military and Police (M&P) Model, as it stopped using the Model of 1905 designation just prior to WWI. Some collectors continue to refer to the between-the-wars M&P as the "Model of 1905 4th Change."

update on M&P

Well I totally disassembled the 38 and man was it rusty inside! I don't think it had ever been opened and cleaned. Single action wouldn't work and I thought maybe it was worn or broken. After thorough cleaning I couldn't find any broken parts or what appeared to be much wear. Put it all back together, oiled it, and tightened strain screw to the bottom and it works! The outside is really rough, no finish, and pitting on the frame. I was going to refinish it but I kinda like the battle worn look. Range report to follow soon.

I took it out yesterday just for a function test. Stopped along an old dirt road, hand around the car door and me hiding behind it, in case something went boom, fired a couple of rounds, and everything was good. total of twelve rounds and I'm good to go!
