I like the way magwell extensions make 1911s look . I know they aid in installing magazine faster . Anybody know of any other pro/cons ? And do they have to be installed by a gunsmith?

I think you pretty much nailed the pros (faster mag changes and they look nice). The only con I could think of is the extra length added to the grip if you carry the gun.

You can install these yourself - heck, I installed a Smith and Alexander one on my 1911 without any problems at all and I'm definitely not a gunsmith by any means (if I haven't taken down a 1911 in awhile it can be a pain for me to put back!). A professional gunsmith can do blending to make it look seamless, but in my case the S&A fit very well to my old S&W 1911.

I am having a gun guy install a Smith and Alexander mag well on my Springfield 1911 this Saturday.
I can let you know how it went/looks.
The one I have is a one piece, some are two piece.

I installed a Kimber mainspring housing/mag well unit on my Kimber Ultra Carry. The hardest part was switching the "guts" from the old to the new mainspring housing. Fit was truly "drop-in".

On this particular gun with the short grip, the mag well added 1/4" to the length and prevents the sharp corners of the mainspring housing from digging into my hand when shooting.

Here's a before and after pic.

I prefer a Smith and Alexander one piece mag well, and have installed them myself on two different guns.

Wonderful accessory for a game gun.
On a carry gun in more limited applications (see Skeezix above)
Just as it was with being a hot rodder in the past, the wealth of pre-fitted CNC made products today, makes most things far more end user friendly these days.

Adds a couple more ounces to the weight thus less felt recoil. The S&A mag well is a no fit drop in for the SW1911.
