Trying to determine which version of the S&W 1911 series is the best, not necessarily the performance series.

I have two E-Series and two Performance Center models. Frankly speaking, if the E-Series offered a model with an adjustable rear sight, I would buy one over the PC models. The difference in function and accuracy is too slight to detect under normal conditions (average-ability shooter using a rest).

I am a pretty consistent S&W consumer, but I stray for 1911s. For the price difference, you might want to look at a Rock Island, Remington or Springfield before you buy. All are good 1911's for much less.

I am actually researching for my brother-in-law, he asked the question. Personally, Colt and Kimber are my choice. I carried a Colt Government Model Mk IV Series 70 when I was a deputy. Still have it, great gun and 100% reliable.

I own or have owned multiple Colts, an Auto Ordinance, Kimbers and S&W's. I even had an Argentine Colt (made in Argentine on Colt machinery) for a while. Without a doubt, the S&W PC that I shot (I have two but only shot one), is the most accurate one I've ever fired. Having said that, I have not tried some others, such as Sig, Ruger or Rock Island, nor any custom guns like Baer or Wilson, but I would put the S&W up against any of them any day.
One other note: I have not fired the gun enough to determine reliability, having fired it less than 100 rounds. I experienced no failures during that time, but all rounds fired were my own reloads, so I can't even speak to reliability with different ammo brands. Still, I would not hesitate to recommend the gun, if accuracy at a reasonable price (especially if buying used) is a the major concern.
