Now that I'm on a buying binge ........I'm looking at the 1911PD Commander size. They no longer make the full-size without the rail, and I'm not a light hanging type. Anyone have the commander size and your impressions?

I bought the Commander size with the CT grips a few years ago. Great trigger, very accurate and reliable. I had an issue with brass hitting me in the forehead, solved with a file on the ejector.

The light weight frame is great for carry, not as good for real long range sessions for this wimp.

Get one....light, but not uncontrolable, and we carry +P in them. Shop around a little; they can be found for less than 900. Great carry gun.

My son and I had a chance to shoot one. We both loved it . Great sights. Great ergonomics. Goes bang every time.

I like mine a lot. Very accurate, very reliable. Light weight is great for carry. My wife likes it too.

I love mine. One of the best factory triggers I've ever had the pleasure to squeeze. I have to fight my friends for it when we go to the range. I have a friend with a $1200+ sig gsr rail gun and he will freely confess I have a better trigger than he does, and it costs less too. Buy it, you'll love it.

Have the "Billboard" 1911Sc, my most everyday carry gun. I put Heinie Straight Eight nightsights on it.
Whether I shoot my light loaded SWC, standard ball or Federal HST or HST+p, it has never bobbled or stuttered on anything I've shot in it.
Gotten to really like the "Billboard" and have a Stainless 1911Sc with small letters in the bottom of the safe as a backup.

Buy it, you won't regret it at all.

Outstanding. The only change made was to get the one piece guide rod out and go to the standard two piece. Other than that, it is a great pistol. I wish they still made the Commander version with stainless slide and the frame anodized or finished to match. And, I think the best one of all was the non-rail PD version with scandium frame and 5 inch barrel and slide.

Great pistol.

I have had mine about 5yrs now and it is a fine pistol. I got over 3,000rds through it without any problems that was the fault of the pistol. I carry it about 95% of the time when I go out.

I too just recently picked up a 1911Sc and like Shawn, I changed out the FLGR to a shorty rod and plug.

My only concern is the finish on the frame. I can literally scrape the finish off with my fingernail! The slide's finish is fine, but the frame's is rediculous!

I sent S&W an email to see if there's anything they can do about it.

How about a hard chrome finish for the frame, Glock? Not only would it be durable, but would be mighty purty as well.

Had mine for about a year, only a single ammo-related malfunction (Undercharged UMC factory round that went "pop" instead of "bang" and failed to fully cycle the slide, fortunately it made it out of the barrel). Light weight is great for carry but you feel a little more recoil than with a steel-framed model, not uncomfortable at all to me, but makes followup shots a little slower. Conceals very easily thanks to the thin slide and frame, accurate and has a great trigger pull. I too replaced the FLGR with a standard guide rod and plug, and also swapped out the trigger for a short trigger.
No problems with any ammo I have tried which includes several brands of hardball, Golden Sabers (185gr and 230gr), Gold Dots, Winchester JHPs, and Federal Hydrashocks.

If I hard chromed it, I would hafta do the safeties, mag button, slide stop and MSH as well. I really think this is a factory flaw. Like I said, I can scrape the finish off with a fingernail just like it's paper or something.

I picked up mine a couple of years ago and like it enough that I retired my S&W 469 after 25 years as my primary carry. Mine is the older "billboard" Sc version but I have no problem with that. It's been totally reliable and have had no finish issues. I did add the Crimson Trace grips. Hope this helps.

Ok. I did some checking and I think the finish on my "experienced" 1911Sc is non-factory.

Here's why.

1. The frontstrap of this pistol has been checkered. Every other "billboard" 1911Sc I've seen has the serrated frontstrap, NOT checkered.

2. This .45 doesn't have the CAUTION - Capable of firing with magazine removed warning on the left side of the dust cover.

3. I've handled other Smith & Wessons of this era (2004) and while those finishes are of the painted on variety, they aren't as bad as this.

So...should I waste my time sending it back to S&W for a re-finishing? Or should I just have my local smitty duracoat it? Or should I just say to hell with it and love it like it is?
