1911SC Eseries Accuracy

Picked up my gun yesterday at my LGS and went to their range with a box of 50. I was going to shoot in what I view as my self defense range 2-10 yrds. I consistently shot low but with a nice group. At 3 yrds I was 2" below the bulls eye and was closer to 2.75/3 at 10yrds. I have multiple 1911's and other S&W's and have never had this experience. I could hit my intended target but felt my sights were over the top. Came home and called S&W support and was told I needed to shoot 25yrd bench rest for true ballistics. I was going to ask about the front sight height but was surprised with the answer. I can't see how my 25 yrd grouping can have such an impact on my 3yrd grouping. This gun was purchased for more EDC than precision shooting. Any thoughts? I should add I really like weight and feel of the gun and found the recoil very manageable

45 ACP pistols are usually sighted in for 25 yards using 230 grain FMJ ammo. Lighter weight bullets will result in a lower point of impact. How you grip the pistol and pull the trigger can also affect the point of impact and the perceived accuracy of the pistol.

It’s nice to know where a gun shoots at close range in case that’s ever needed, but I’ve never heard of a .45 automatic being deliberately set up to zero at closer than 25 yards. Take their advice and see what you get. If this is a used gun, is there any indication that the sights have been “monkeyed with?”

Yes I understand the ballistics but none of my other (5) .45's shoot 2" low at 3yrds. Shot 230gr FMJ's. Going back to the range today and will be shooting other guns as well. If my technique is that bad at 3yrds I should sell my guns and take up Fly Fishing.

I’ve had same model of firearm with only different serial numbers with a difference in poa and poi. Same day, same ammo, same or different shooter…. Internal, external and terminal ballistics are a funny thing for sure.

I agree, 25 yards is the distance for zero.

Try different ammo maybe?

Will do. Plan on shooting today and tomorrow. It is all about the distance for me and my concerns. Had I been 2" low at 15yrds initially I would have continued on with adjustment. I was so close to have POI so far off I was stunned/shocked. This was very consistent unless I made what I thought were extreme adjustments. Even though POI was off the grouping was very nice. I am going to keep trying. Are the dovetails on the 1911's proprietary or will Tru Glo fit?
