I purchased a 1917 trigger with beautiful case colors and smooth face for my Pre 27. I was unaware of a different design mechanism for the hand spring. If I install the correct spring mechanism, will this trigger function in the Pre 27? (Am a S&W trained armorer).

I can't answer your question, but I have had a bit of trouble getting a 1917 trigger to fit a third model 44.

I've never done one either. However, from tennexplore's brief notes they're interchangeable but including MIM parts.

I presume you'd need the 1917 type hand in addition, to work with the 1917 hand spring. Once you get your side plate off, a visual comparison should confirm. If it looks good, your next step is to try it.

The modern hand that is in the gun should work. I would try the one that is in the gun as it is already "fitted" to the ratchet pads. It's neither too wide nor too narrow. I have used a modern hand in a 1920's N-frame (before the hammer block in the sideplate became a thing). It worked fine.
