The full moon clips are great for fast reloads but I sure like the auto rim case for just everyday fun shooting.
Been shooting 6gr. unique with the rimmed case with a 255gr. swc.
What are you guys favorite loads -acp or auto rim?

Don't forget the Rimz plastic moonclips. Easy mooning and de-mooning and a lot cheaper than .45 AR brass.
Unfortunately I do not own a 1917...yet.

For just general plinking, I have been shooting a 200 grain cowboy bullet with 4.5 grains of Winchester Super Target. Light report, low recoil and great accuracy in my 1955 and Mountain Gun. Use either Auto-Rim or ACP cases. Same weight of American Select works too. American Select is cheaper.

I use just a smell more Unique than that with my 255 grain SWC's in the 1917's that I have. Love using the auto rim case.

I just realized I completely mis-read the original post...
Oh well, enjoy the useless information.

Closer to the subject, does anybody have any experience with plated bullets and how they shoot with the shallow rifling of the 1917?

dbarale,
Plating isn't an issue in a 1917/1937/1955/25-2/625. With shallow groove rifling, is's how hard, and well fitted the bullet is. I have a 1917, a 1937, and a 25-2. My wheel weight cast bullets are water hardened. They work great!

Here's an article that explains it better then I can.

My 1917 loves 5.6 gr. Unique under a 200 gr. lead SWC, while my 1937 prefers 255 gr. SWC and 5.8 gr. Unique, ACP or Auto Rim cases.

I shoot either WST or American Select in 45 AR cases for plinking and 45 ACP cases for PPC type shoots. Both powders burn cleaner than Unique.

Well...

I have a desecrated Webley Mk. VI, 'Percy,' with the cylinder milled, shot him with authentic half-moon clips, which worked fine, and full moon clips, which worked fine and held up under more shootings. The cases eventually ruptured--news flash! .45 ACP cases are NOT the same diameter as .455 Eley! You can, however, sayeth the folks on Gunboards, fire-form .45AR into something that will size in Eley dies. I have a 100 rounds of that for experimentation.

Starline brass is making .45AR. To shoot the Surplus Special 'authentically,' I suppose I'd see what load comes close to duplicating 1918 spec .45ACP. For fun shooting, I'd probably use the Starline brass and lead SWC and see what happened.

This September/October 'Handgunner' has an article by Charles E. Petty saying it doesn't matter you shoot in a .45ACP wheelgun--it won't hit it. I hope that's not borne out by my own experiences.

Best!

I have used full moon clips, or half moon clips for several years. Recently I happened on 500 rds new Rem AR brass...will probably start using the AR brass. I usually forget to take my "de-mooner" to the range with me and sometimes, especially with cold hands, getting old brass out of the full moon clips can be a bit uncomfortable. If I need faster reloads, I can use HKS speed loaders. Have used them for years in my 29's.

What little I shoot my 1917 I probley shoot half auto rim and half half moon clips, or probley just poke them out most the time!
