I have the opportunity to view a "98%+" 1917 this coming weekend. I'm an M&P guy and am seeking a little advice as to what the range is. Asking is $1600. If truly original 98%+ w/ period issue holster, what's the price? Everything I've read falls a little short of this number. Thanks.

A 98% original-finish anything is very scarce, so on the surface of it, $1600
doesn't sound high.

On the other hand, a 1917 98% original-finish is probably non-existant , so I would
think this gun is refinished. Be very careful here.

Thanks, Mike. I was hoping you'd chime in. Sound advice, well taken.

I have a close to 98% M1917. At least I think it's that good. Never seen one better. Ser #1641, groved hammer, dished stocks, with only the slightest turn mark and one small scratch on the butt. I paid $400 for it last year, and have been offered $1200 for it. I'm just going to keep it. I have shot it, and love the long hammer throw and the kick.

Mike's advice is right on the money. Percentages are very subjective, of course , but when you have 90 yr. old guns that are judged to be 98% original or better, they are few and far between and you will pay dearly for them if the seller is knowledgeable. I've seen only a small handful of 1917s that I would put at 98%, or better, in 65 yrs. of looking at them and it always took top dollar to buy them at the time. Ed.

The 98-99% 1917's are priced all over the board, but always high. Usually in the $1350-1800 range the last year or so. One fellow at the Oct Tulsa show had a beauty for, as I recall, somewhere around $2800, but he may fly over from Mars for the show.
In the last 2-3 years, I have sold some beautiful holsters complete with thongs and base plugs, and never topped $200. For the last 6 mos or so, every decent 1917 holster I have seen has been priced $250-275.
So, If original blue and truly 98% with matching grips and a nice holster, 1600 is NOT out of line at all.
I wouldn't put it in the holster a lot!

Thanks to all for the input. I'll let you know the outcome after I see it. Love this forum.

Two me, a 98+ gun is WITHOUT BLEMISH but fired, less than a box, and the recoil shield shows case vibration around the firing pin ONLY. A 99% is factory fired only.

Few guns over 30 years old meet that, but the "white gloove crowd" has quite a few !....Have a Blessed Thanksgiving---dan
