Any idea what something in this condition would be worth? Or would it be a hard pass? Serial 151xxx

Thanks

I would not consider this gun without a picture of the butt showing the serial number. It's hard to tell but it kind of looks like the "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamp on the bottom of the barrel may be missing. If that's so, then the serial may have been removed as well. If that's the case then it's an absolute hard pass.

The butt has a brass plug where the lanyard swivel was. US Property is marked on the butt as well.

The stocks appear to be rather ill-fitting and to have been slathered with some sort of overly glossy finish. The escutcheons are too fresh looking also, which leads me to believe they may be reproductions. To my eye the gun itself screams that cold blue has been liberally applied. With the missing butt swivel (and the hole filled) there're just too many negatives I count right off to seriously consider it at anything but a totally bargain basement price. And even then I'd hesitate reaching for my billfold. You can do better.

Those grips are definitely repros.

I wouldn't get excited about it on first blush. A friend of mine brought in a piece for me to look at yesterday. He was all jacked up and had put out some effort in trade and cash to get it. It was a rather early 1917 frame in the 39K range with many of the of markings removed, refinished, rebarreled with a model of 1950 barrel and cylinder, all numbers except the butt were removed. It also had a pinned front sight and had an adjustable rear sight installed. All of the work was done "professionally" but I told him none of it would add any value to the piece except in the eye of the beholder. He was thankful for my honest assessment, but I could tell he wanted a second opinion, can't fault that.

"Okay, you're ugly too." ;)

For the right price this may be a candidate for a snubby project as I see no collector value in the limited photography so far.
