I got hooked on Taylor Sheridan-Kevin Costner's series with the cowboys. Loved Yellowstone, Kelly Reilly & the gun handling. Not necessarily in that order.......... ;)

Since the second season of 1923 just got released, I ordered it. I re-watched all of the first season so it would be fresh in my mind, plot wise. Got the second season in & binge watched it in two days. Wow. Some super-cool action that's not completely unbelievable (which is rare) and some parts that just broke my heart. Not gonna give away any plot lines here. LOL!

Much more than Yellowstone & 1883, 1923 is certainly R-rated. So be aware of that if someone doesn't want/need to watch it. Not just boobs either.

Having the 1883/1923/Yellowstone collection allows me to think that the 1923 series might be the best one. All three have the battle between encroachment & the dangers of its time. But 1923 shows the straddle of horses to autos, phone lines coming in, electric coming in, etc. It's a subplot that's intriguing to this history buff.

Plus, 1923 allows a wide variety of firearm options. Yellowstone is AR-15/M-16 heaven, 1883 is lever actions & single shot pistols. 1923 allows Tommy guns, Unertl-scoped rifles, lever actions, old revolvers & my personal fav: .416 Rigby double rifle. The Spenser Dutton character shoots the dbl rifle with excellent technique, IMO, which shows some lessons. Why, he even reloads. Yes, he uses a bad guy or three as a backstop too.

Timothy Dalton plays a wickedly evil character. He's involved in much of the R-rated parts. He is a "robber baron" personified in the series. Excellent performance by Dalton.

Helen Mirror uses a dbl bbl & scoped rifle with great effect in the movie. Ironic, as she's English with all their gun control beliefs. But she operates the bolt on the rifle like she knows what she's doing.

Much like 1883, there's very little humor to be found in the entire series. As mentioned, there's parts that broke my heart & I am one hard-hearted SOB. LOL!

The ending is doesn't tie everything up in one bow like 1883 & Yellowstone but it does complete a major narrative.

If folks are on the lookout for good, decent quality storytelling, this is a good series to watch in the dregs of summer. Lord knows, there's nothing else worth watching on tv these days now that football has ended.

1923 was a laugh riot by the finale. So much pain and drudgery for so little payoff.

I like several of Sheridan's shows but 1923 was horribly written.

I haven’t watched any of those series but am intrigued to start. Would it be best to start with the 1883 series working my way to Yellowstone getting all the background as I go or does it not matter ….?

We will probably finish 1923 S2 tonight... can't say I'm terribly impressed so far. Very little has actually happened to progress the story, just a lot of suffering and tragedy for just about everyone involved.

1883 was fantastic, and importantly a complete and cohesive story that arrived at a believable conclusion.

Yellowstone started out pretty good, but rapidly went the way of most series where the only goal seems to be getting renewed. I prefer shows with a complete story arc, rather than just drama, ad infinitum.... We might get around to watching the final season this summer.

BTW, if you like Sheridan and find modern settings interesting you might check out Lioness which follows a CIA special activities group hunting terrorists. Not necessarily top shelf, but entertaining and the gun handling/action is mostly pretty good.

To be fair, they ran out of time to wrap things up, IMO. I didn't care one way or another about the ending. Of the trio, I agree it has the worst ending.

Yeah, it will work doing them in the year of the show's setting. There's virtually no overlap between shows, verbally or plot wise. Well, the big house is in 1923 & YS.

I enjoyed all three different series', but I liked 1883 best overall, I think. YS delivered the best surprises, humor & plain entertainment. 1923 delivered the most emotion, most of it sadness. They won't win any awards, aside from good ratings & video sales.

My .o2

I thought 1883 was okay. I found 1923, much like Yellowstone, unnecessarily vulgar at times. Just didn't add to the story.

I prefer Sheridan’s films especially “Hell or High Water” over his tv shows. I watched the first season of Yellowstone, wasn’t great and then only the final episode to see how it wrapped up. I think of the series I like 1883 the best.

Helen Mirren? No kidding?! She is a prolific actress, and very good, too.

(I'm rewatching Prime Suspect at the moment.)

I enjoyed Yellowstone immensely. The spin-offs, not so much.
1883 - Too politically correct for a time that was anything but.
1923 - How much bad luck can one person have? Apparently a lot. Also, the sub-plot for the Indian woman didn't fit into any of the rest of the series.

I live 30 minutes from Butte and have not watched an episode of any of them. I do look forward to the day that filming ends on the end of the series.

How did y'all get the 1923 season 2 DVD? It is not scheduled to be released until August.

If you DO have it, you probably got a chinese bootleg copy.

I fell for that when I bought the very last Yellowstone DVD. The DVD would not play on my machine without skipping and locking up. The vendor sent me another copy and it did the same thing. When I looked it up I found out that it had not been released yet. THEN, I bought one from a different vendor and all was well.

I enjoy Lioness. But I can’t stand when they have 120lb women just destroying physically large, strong, skilled men in hand to hand combat. It’s just not reality.

Did anyone watch for firearms errors in 1923? In one of the scenes where they're getting ready to go off to battle Jacob is handling his trusty 1894 Winchester. The one he's holding has the long forearm (long and thin past the barrel band(, then in the next shot it has the short forearm, and then back to the long forearm in the next shot. Cara is using her shotgun effectively in several encounters but the shells are the red ones with which we've become familiar. I don't think they were red in 1923. Other errors?

I like the show though, and probably much closer to reality than most. Some Colt SAAs but quite a few S&Ws and Colt DAs too. And Jacob gives up his 1905 S&W for the shoot out at the train station when Spencer arrives home, for a more practical, for that kind of encounter, Colt 1911.

Bought mine via Wally World. Watched it all, everything played in my blu-ray dvd with no issues at all.

I'm also jonseing for Landman Season 2 to hit but they've barely began shooting it.

I know nada about the show, but did sell a restored Winchester Model 55 takedown I had to one of their props masters. No idea if it ended up in the show, but he said that's the project he wanted it for, didn't even flinch at my price, and left his business card in case I came up with anything else for'em. Nice guy.

*To note, this was quite a while back now before they'd started promoting '1923' so I thought it was maybe just a pilot for a new show or something - who knew? haha
