"Texas To Bataan" staring the three "Range Busters".
I usually watch these old westerns near bedtime.
Naturally I watch for firearm mistakes.
In this one the "Hero" discovers enemy rifles stocked piled in Arizona.
Opening a cache, He picks up a enemy rifle ,, checks the stamping and exclaims, "These rifles were made in Japan" (the rifles were U.S. Model 1917 .30 caliber).

“Sargent Shultz” on Hogan’s Heroes carried a Krag. But I’ve read a few times that the Jewish actor who played him refused to carry a German Mauser. In one High Chaparral “Buck” carries around an authentic Henry rifle looking for guys selling guns to the Apaches. The guns in the crates are those Winchester 92s made to look like Henry’s but they call them “Spencer’s”. Loved the show, though.

I had the opportunity to examine Col. Klinks(Hogans's Heroes) Luger when Stenbridges auctioned it off several years ago. It was clearly an American Import as it was marked "Germany" on the frame!

Both John Banner and Werner Klemperer agreed to play their parts only if the Germans looked the fool all the time. One of my favorite shows.

Saw Klink several times with a P38. Don't ever recall seeing him with a Luger.


As for Banner and the Krag, that sounds like total internet nonsense to me.


"Nazis were evil, and I'm a Jew, so I won't carry a Nazi rifle. I will wear a Nazi uniform, salute and say 'Heil Hitler!', but I absolutely WILL NOT carry a Nazi rifle!!!"


Does that make any sort of sense whatsoever?



Also, in at least one episode, he carried an MP40. So he would carry a Nazi machine gun but not a Nazi rifle??


Sometimes Hogan and the boys carried 1911s. Sometimes Lugers. Sometimes Colt Model Ms. Very often the Germans would have Thompsons with the buttstocks removed instead of MP40s. This was 1960's television. They used what was available. If it was historically correct - wonderful. If it was not historically correct - the viewing audience would not know, so who cared?

Love Hogan's Hero's, its on every night on MeTV. But the part that cracks me up is that there's always snow on the ground. They lift the top of the stump on a summers night and the stump is covered in snow. There out gardening on a beautiful summer day and there's patches of snow on the ground. Last night they closed a window that was all frosted over, but the trees were all full of green leafs. Yup, the snow never melts at Stalag 13.

60s TV was not always historical for sure. Never saw k98 in a Hogan episode, Krags for most guards. They decided to keep the snow all the time for continuity. Look close at the trees, once in a while you can spot a palm tree. Funny. As a kid, I liked Hilda and Helga too.

Aha, caught you! Those rifles were Japanese made.
The Japanese were always good ay duplicating other
nation's weaponry.
