I bought this today. It's a new condition, possibly never fired Marlin 336 from 1954 in its original box. I really wasn't looking for it, but a close friend needed cash. I really like the wood.
I've got a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45/70 that I've hunted every year since 1973. They are great guns.

IIRC, the Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 was introduced in 1998 altho the .45-70 caliber has been in Marlin's line-up since 1973 or so. I saw an interesting Marlin in .45-70 in a LGS in upper NYS: 24" bbl and full-length magazine tube. Anyone familiar with this model?

Not a hunter, but I remember lever actions all over. Millions were made yet you rarely see one.

I love Marlin's and they are my lever gun of choice. IMHO, their action is a lot less complicated and more reliable than Winny's, although Winny's usually have better fit & finishes.

You have one of the better pieces of furniture on a Marlin - maybe withstanding a collector's or commemorative edition. I don't know what you paid for it but I'd say you got a great score there Sir!

I believe they made a few versions like that. One would the Cowboy Limited with an octagonal barrel.

Congratulations
Nice find plus being able to help a friend

My mom bought a 336 in 35 rem for my father in the mid 50s.
He hunted in s florida dade co with it. The rifle made it's way to Pa. and was shared around the family finally landing in central fl.
some years later.
I learned reloading around this cartridge and straight wall handgun calibers. In the late 90s the gun was stolen from my brothers house in deltona fl. Sad day for sure. My wife replaced it to me with a new 336 35 around 2010.
I have to say.. the old rifle was night and day smoother, not sharp and pinchy in the guard with a trigger so fine i can't forget how much I liked it. It may have even been a wee light. There were never any accidents though.
