This is the third S&W to come out of my father's collection. I think this is a pre-27; it has the fancy checkering along the top. Serial # S 1393XX.

The other two I have (well, the guys on this forum have identified) as a 1902 .38 special CTG

and a 1960 .357 mod 27

So this is the last of the bunch.

I doubt that anyone on this board identified your M&P .38 as a 1902 CTG. The CTG just tells you that it's for .38 Special CARTRIDGES!!!

Thats a nice trio. Do you have the missing rear sights from the 1960 Model 27. Your Father had nice taste in revolvers. You are correct on the production date of the first one. The SCSW dates it to approx 1955.

Nice firearms with a family history... it doesn't get much better than that.

Some N-frames in that serial number range shipped up to several years after 1955. You would need a factory letter to establish the exact shipping date for yours. But it's likely that it was manufactured during the 1954-55 period. Very fortunate that he kept the rear sight.

Whats the serial number on that 4 screw. I was just shooting mine today, SN- S 187196. Maybe from the same year. Silky smooth gun.
