Once more unto the breach!

I had so much fun reviving the 1964 F100 that I decided to tackle it's old tent-mate: The white Mustang convertible mouse hotel.

It's a 1983 V8 Mustang convt. with a 1993 nose and dash/wiring harness and seats and a few other tidbits from the 1993 donor. Pretty rust free and straight, but need everything except major body work. Basket case without a basket.

Back story: 20ish years ago a good customer and friend dropped this off.It had just been painted but was absent a motor/trans and the top was iffy. It rolled. He wanted me to put a motor in it etc and get the fuel injection setup working. No rush..but he had to get it out of his shop as his employees has started to "work" on it while he was in Az starting a new life..as it turns out.
Make a long story short,he stayed out there and told me to keep the car for what he already owed me.Signed over the title and sent it to me. Swell. Damn. Well..it was a Mustang.

He passed away of a brain tumor in 2018. Very sad and so young at 54. I shall dedicate the resurrection to him. :)

Back to 2002: his bored employees (he ran a floor covering business) decided in the Bosses absence and without his blessing, to install an old 289 from an early 1960s Ford into the Mustang. They also did the complete wiring harness. Luckily they never tried to start it as it probably would have burned to the ground. They were NOT mechanics. They were floor layers.

Then it sat for 16 years in my tents out of the elements, more or less and since the tent is coming down, everything in there must find a new home. I've been advertising the car as a huge rolling project for someone but no takers. Not even a tire kicker.Sure hate to junk it..

I decided to start picking away at it. Foolish on a money return vs time spent..but i'm hoping it peaks (perks?) interest to someone..somewhere along the trail as I get it at least into a driver/stopper.

I happen to have an ideal engine for it from an old 1997 5.0 Explorer which came with the GT40 heads and roller cam from the factory.Only 66k miles. Guess I'll pop that out and take the Explorers carcass to the boneyard. Scrap values are up!

Then pull the drive train from the white car and see what's useable. Hoping the 5 speed and bell/clutch are useable. 289 is siezed.

I must be a Mass-ochist.. :)

Step one was to clean it off and see just how deep the hole is: I can't see the bottom! If nothing else it will make a fun field beater..;)

Cleaned up pretty nice..amazing how well the paint held up! Emptied the trunk out..decent carb style intake..most everything else is junk. I pulled out the Explorer motor. That was an adventure in itself.

Onward..

I'm a little confused... do the pics in the first post show the Exploder engine already in place? Or did they put 87-93 fuel injection parts on the 289?

The engine compartment looks more like an 86-93 car than earlier car as well. And it has the complete interior from an 87-93.

Are you sure this car is an '83, and not an '86 or later?

Regardless, someone already did a ton of work on this car. Should make a nice driver when done.

The first car I bought new was an '89 LX 5.0, and a buddy who had an '83 5.0 GT later bought a '90 LX 5.0. We had a lot of fun with those cars!

Yes..it is definitely a 1983 car that someone "updated" to a 1993 nose, full wiring harness, dash, seats and door panels.
The engine currently in the car is an early 60s 289 (5 bolt block) that the "employees" tried to put in, including the TPI injection that would have come in the 1993 Mustang donor. The Explorer motor is out of a 1997 so it also wears TPI injection. However, this 1983 Mustang will be going back to a carburetor and single wire HEI distributor.

It's just going to be much easier and cheaper to go old school and from where I stand..better. Keep it simple.

Todays progress: 5 speed transmission is out and feels good and tight.Driveshaft too. Bellhousing is reuseable even with the "extra" holes those guys drilled. Flywheel is correct (50oz balance) and a good Centerforce clutch. Will pull the boat anchor tomorrow.

Time for a beer! :)

should look like this when done... lol
a 1989 roller 5.0 with GT40P Heads on top of a 347 stroker with a Tremec 3550 5 speed Edelbrock F4B (Cobra) intake & Holley 600 carb... perfect for my 67 Fastback

This Won’t be that nice! This is a low budget build. I may put a 6 point cage in it and take it Champ car racing. It fits into D class nicely. They do a 12hr at Thompson every year. We shall see ;)

Making good progress. Looks like they also swapped the SROD trans for a T5. Just be careful of 3rd gear... ;)

I'd keep it EFI, but then I detest Holley carbs.

If you do go Champ car, will they allow a brake upgrade? You'll definitely need it. I lost count of the front rotors I cracked when I was drag racing. Fortunately, I could buy take-offs at Saleen for cheap back then.

Fox Body Mustangs will never die. They still have a huge following.

This was my 1989 5.0L LX. The pictures were taken in late 2010.
I sold the car in June 2013 after it started developing engine and
transmission problems. The car had just over 325,000 miles on it
and the engine other than a new water pump was untouched.
Without a doubt the best car I have ever owned.
Still miss it today.

This is my current and last project, a 1976 Ford F-250 4x4.

It is powered by a healthy 1966 Mercury Marauder 410.

Looks like a fun project. There is a huge amount of support for the Fox body Mustangs, I’d guess two thirds of the swap meet area at Ford Nationals in Carlisle is devoted to Fox bodies.

I also have a 1983 Fox body Ford, but it has four doors. Mine is a LTD with the 3.0 straight six and automatic trans. At one time I considered converting it to a V-8, but finally decided to keep it stock. It runs like a champ, so why mess with it.
