I am looking for a photo essay on the different types of trigger guards used on S&W pistols. In the SCSW on several models is lists 1st, 2nd & 3rd trigger guards but does not explain or show the difference or give a time line. Can anyone provide this info and photo's?

3rd - one of the changes from the Automatic Improvement Program (AIP) in 1988. Length of the trigger guard increased by .175"

4th - 1991 ~ present

As with everything S&W, times are approximate and nothing is carved in stone.

Thanks for the excellent references. If photo's 1, 3 & 4 matched 1st, 2nd, & 3rd it would make sense to me. I guess my problem is in the descriptions in the SCSW. On page 315, Model 5904 it shows the square TG but in the features it lists that as the 1st trigger guard which does not jive with the info above. Page 300 model 3906 it shows again the 1st TG being square. Page 313, model 4586 it shows 2nd TG but that is too late for a square TG. The authors aren't clear as to which style TG's they reference to.

Originally I thought the 1, 2, and 3 mentioned in the SCSW 3rd was more like the 1st, 2nd, and 4th I posted.
Threw me for a loop in the beginning too. Excellent book with tons of great info!!

But, it was the first trigger guard the 5904 was offered with.;)

I don't have my book handy and am not familiar enough with the .45s to be able comment. For the longest time I thought there were only three trigger guards.

You also have to remember that what happened to one model may not have happened to another model at the same time. If one model sold quicker than another, the changes might show up quicker in it than the others, and vice versa.
