Finally had some free time to try out our recently acquired 1918 M&P today. While I am only used to shooting Rossi and Nagant revolvers, I am now hooked and thoroughly impressed with the quality of old S&W wheel guns. The trigger, both SA and DA, was the smoothest that I have ever felt and the accuracy of this old gun was quite shocking. I certainly see now why the "American Rifleman" mag ranked the S&W hand ejector's as #2 on their list of top ten handguns. I am now a true convert and will never look at all of my polymer guns the same.

I picked this one up a few years ago for a song and pretty much share your feeling

Congratulations on the gun and S&W can certainly change you out look on what a revolver should be. Just be careful as you started down a slippery slope because one S&W usually leads to more S&W's.

Is there anything finer than a trip to the range with some prewar and mid-century five-screw S&Ws? Even when I head to the range with a big blaster, an older .22, .32 or .38 goes along with me. I just get a big smile on my face when I handle these classics, and with experience and attention to detail my groups are getting tighter.

Congratulations on your new gun. Bet you'll have another old Smith before too much time has passed. If you like .22, look for a K-22 Masterpiece. If you don't insist on the fifth screw, an early Model 17 would fill the bill nicely as well. Or if you are really into the older weapons, look for a K-22 First Model (Outdoorsman); they were made between 1931 and 1940, and will feel pretty similar to your M&P.

I am certainly going to do a ton of research and be on the lookout for more of the older revolvers now. I truly have the bug, just like my first Mosin led to over 150 C&R guns in the last few years. My wife and I carried and shot other guns today such as an XD45 Tactical, Sigma .40, Taurus 709 and a Rossi Model 352 .38, all of those were fun but there was just something about the old M&P that just outclassed them all we even ended up placing another S&W on layaway, this time it was a Victory model that way lying in their case looking like it needed a new home.

Hi, I am the proud owner of a 1919 shipped M&P 6" barrel. 38 special. A fun gun to shoot is right! I have done much better with it using Smith target grips ( vs. original). Also have a pair of C.T. laser grips on it now. Enjoy shooting this fine old gun! Bob

Welcome to the tribe! The older S&Ws have two things going for them, better craftsmanship and due to thier age, if they were used much you have a nice already broken in smooth trigger pull. Nothing like shooting nice little groups with a revolver that was born before you where!
