I have a 2.5" M629 Backpacker shown below.

My question is: Were there any other 2.5" 629s shipped by S&W?

They offer the 629 PC, but that has a 2 5/8" barrel. Plus I see lots of 3" M629s, but 2.5" barrels seem rare.

There was 103839 that was sold by Camfour Distributors. It was a M629-5 with a 2.5-inch barrel. It was unusual because it had FIXED sights. Traditional style.

The 2.5-inch Backpacker was a -6 with product code 150165. IINM they were introduced in 2012.

While aesthetically speaking, the 2.5" Model 629s look nice, I do not see the practicality of such. It still is a steel N frame, and more likely than not is going to be carried in a holster. If I am carrying a steel framed N frame on a belt holster, I might as well run a 4" gun.

With that said, I do see some merit in the Scandium guns, due to their significantly lighter weight. The short barreled scandium .44 mag may be an ideal backpacking arm for some, in bear country.

I do find that my 4" scandium 329 is extremely light as it is though, and not really noticeable when belt carrying. The extra sight radius does help as well, as compared to other big bore snubs I have played with.

Bottom line though I suppose is that if a certain configuration "sings" to ya, it really may not matter as far as practicality is concerned, and everyone with the same view points would get rather boring quickly.
