Here is a link to a Chicago Police Department publication analyzing homicides for 2011:
https://portal.chicagopolice.org/po...s/Statistical Reports/Murder Reports/MA11.pdf
Of the 433 homicides in 2011, 362 were committed with firearms, however only 1 was committed with a rifle. (page 23). In addition, 87.3% of homicide offenders had prior arrest records (page 56). Finally, 144 of of the 433 homicides, 33%, resulted from gangland/narcotics altercations (page 30).
So, as far as an "assault weapons" ban, since 1 of 433 homicides was committed with a rifle (the report does not describe the rifle) it does not appear that an AWB would have any affect on homicides.
This is information that is relevant to the AWB discussion and should be forwarded to your state and federal representatives as well as the media.
