I think Colt's marketing went with the Cobra name because it was the first snake gun, and they probably felt a series of snake guns has more cache' than simple model numbers. Making an aluminum framed revolver as the first one out of the gate wouldn't make sense. So we're stuck with an all stainless steel Cobra for now. Maybe a Bantamweight Cobra in the future?
The new Night Cobra is exactly what I had hoped for when I first saw the new Cobra: DAO, bobbed or shrouded hammer, a darker non-reflective finish, and night sights. I was initially a little put off by the $200 price bump, but the finish is a DLC coating, not just a cheaper paint. That finish and the night sights with VZ grips add up to enough value to justify the increased cost.
And if initial reports are to be believed, the trigger pull is even better than the stainless version which is pretty darn good. This makes sense. On a Colt's action, every part does multiple functions. You can't change one part without having an effect on other parts. It seems that with a Colt DA/SA, you can get either a pretty good single action trigger and a pretty good double action trigger OR a really great double action trigger and forget about the single action. If the double action trigger on this new Night Cobra is as good as they say, I won't miss the single action.
