.21 Sharp - new kid in town

I have been thinking that for years! What was wrong with the 6.5x55?
Or any other 6.5. There are several others. Main thing is that it must fit into an AR. The very first “Assault Rifle” was the Russian Federov Automat, which was chambered for the 6.5x51 Japanese cartridge.

Actually, the 6.5 Creedmoor was designed from the ground up as a long range precision target round to be used in a short action bolt gun. It's optimized to use the long for caliber low drag bullets seated out so as to not intrude on the powder space.

If I was younger and in better health, I think I'd build one and get back into long range rifle. Uh, maybe skip the younger, the last match I shot, my partner was 85 and outshot me. OTOH, my whole rig cost less than his action, way less than his scope.

Will the 6.5 Creedmoor shoot any better than this? This is at 100 yards with iron sights.

This round, like all new rounds, is not meant for the populace of this forum.

The heeled bullet design of the .22 LR will never accomodate modern bullet designs, especially in the non-lead variety.

This round will. They designed it to use the existing plentiful .22 LR case, to keep costs low.

Don’t like it? Don’t buy it. They won’t notice, because they already know you won’t buy it since it won’t work in the .22 you’ve had since before manned space flight.

Way back during the first onset of 6.5 fervor , my Buddy Mike read all them Gun Magazines. He just had to have a 264 Mag!
So he ordered a barreled action from Flaigs, FN Supreme Action, long heavy Douglas Barrel.
He was stationed at Travis and living in Fairfield, CA and he found a local Smith to stock it up.
When it was ready, with ammo, scope and sling it weighed over 12 pounds.
Mike was a pretty good size guy, but after a deer hunt in the CA Coastal Range, he really hated that gun!

Men:”Because they don’t make a .46!”

Women: “Because they don’t make a .21!”

(until now ;)

I'm down. Look at everything else that is going on in the ammo world with the Creedmoor and Arc ammo. Why not make a better mousetrap. Looks like this round would be even more accurate than the 22LR.

Come out with a low cost semi-auto rifle or pistol and I am in like Flynn.

When it becomes more accurate than the targets posted below, then I may repeat may contemplate one.

.22 Magnum is good, but costs about as much as 9mm. .21 is supposed to be priced closer to .22LR. Which probably means it’ll sell for just under Magnum prices.

To me price irrelavent... Just a gimmick.....It WILL NEVER equal the .22 mag.......Bet 3 years from now that won't make the ammunition anymore......Them ya stuck with a gun with no ammo.......IE 5mm remington-Win 17wsm.

Tend to agree.

Not really sure.

Much will depend on accuracy (where the 22 mag doesn't really shine compared to 22 lr). Different projectiles pushed faster could make for a more useful varmint rig.

Felt/thought much the same for years/ then I got a CZ452FS .22 mag [because it's a Mannlicher :)]

With a 1-4x20 Leupold scope it will, on a regular basis, due sub-MOA 5 shot groups at 100yds off the bench. Confession, in the field, given the small scope's limitations, most groups are just "under the crosshairs" about 1.5" at 100 yds.

.22mag ammo is much better than the stuff from the 60s.

"New" ammo seems to just be splitting hairs between existing calibers. This seems to fit between the .17hmr and .22 mag.

The 357 Maximum was developed for winning at silhouette matches, which it did. I love mine.

This goes back over 20 years, but I once did a very exhaustive test of various types and brands of .22 LR ammunition, including both match and non match ammunition, about anything I could find. Something like ten different types. My rifle was a Winchester 52B with a 10x Unertl scope. Range was 50 Yards. What I found was there was relatively little difference in grouping performance, basing that on 5-shot group averages. the best groups were with using plain old CCI SV and Lapua Match (better groups than Eley), which were a little more than 1.25 MOA. As I remember, the worst groups were just a bit less than 2 MOA, and that was with Remington discount store bulk pack. So, unless you are an Olympic-level shooter, who needs any better performance from a .22?

You can still buy those. . . but probably won't find them at Wally World. I sure hope they don't stop making the 17wsm, hard to find a better mid-range prairie dog round.
