Hello Everyone

I am thinking about purchasing a model 53 Jet to shoot. Before I make the purchase, I would like to find a 22 LR Cylinder. Can anyone tell me a source for a cylinder?

Thanks

Steve

They are not the same as the .22 LR cylinder used in the K-22 series; they are longer, the same length basically as a Model 19 cylinder. They are scarce, they are spendy and you find them wherever you find them. More people are looking for them than there are cylinders out there. The best route is probably to buy a Model 53 that already has one fit to it.

Hamilton Bowen makes custom cylinders and has produced one for finishing into a .22 rimfire cylinder for the Jet.

I looked into doing this for my 8 3/8 53 a few years back. I finally decided to just buy an 8 3/8 M17. The cost at the time wasn't much different then having a custom cylinder made, and it keeps the wear and tear off my jet.

Just came in from shooting my 53. It's my most used 22 revolver. If S&W had a real custom shop you could just order one. Fat chance!

I need one too, but I refuse to be hijacked. I do have the inserts and plenty jet ammo and dies, but doubt I have hasseled shooting over a couple boxs of LR in 35 years.

A couple of Model 53 .22 LR cylinders have showed up on GunBroker in the last couple of years. Both sold for around $500 (each!).

That's absurd. I just bought a M17 and a M48 both 8 3/8" pinned bbls. and in mint condition for $250 each more. I have two M53's and I guess, unless I find a great deal on a 22 cyl., I will never shoot them. Inserts are a hassle. Big Larry

As a vintage BMW owner, we have a saying about things we want but can never find, and as a Mod 53 Jet owner with the extra .22 clyinder, I can state positively that they are made from "Unobtainum". Jeff

they show up from time to time. you just have to want one real bad. as the old saying goes, whatever the market will bear. why own a jet you won't shoot because of not having a 22lr cylinder? the real fun is jet ammo anyway.

I've had a 17 since the early '70's. And have my dads 53 with inserts but no extra cylinder. The inserts are a bit of a pain but it's one that does well with LR ammo. I'd really like to find a LR cylinder cheap but I just don't worry about the extra effort. My 17 is a pain, tight chambers, so some ammo is hard to load and to empty. So sometimes "it's all how you look at it" . Some LR's actually do better in the 53 than the 17... that isn't supposed to be possible??? I really enjoy the 53 because it was the first pistol I ever shot. Also, it was dad's gun. I've shot the 17 so much, I think I could qualify blindfolded, maybe, anyway...

A slightly cheaper option might be to sleeve an early recessed Model 19 cylinder and use a Model 17 extractor. I've seen several used 19 cylinders for around $50.
