22 Short Ammo

When I was a kid in the 50's walking across the Mojave Desert with my trusty Winchester M-67. I shot shorts because they were cheaper than .22 long rifle. .22 longs were pretty much gone by then.

I try to purchase every 22cal rifle thats says 22 shorts, longs and long rifle bullets. I mainly have the older turn of the century pump 22 rifles. But i did get a new henry carbine 22 s, l ,lr lever action for my sons and grandson.

22 CB's are nice and quiet when hunting varmits and wabbits.

I have a Henry as well, it eats shorts just fine.

The CBs are pretty tame, but high-velocity shorts are not that far behind .22LR in power. And my Henry will hold 21+1 shorts as opposed to 17+1 LR.

I haven't seen .22L in years. The Marlin 39A (my second one is forty-plus years old, and I still wish I hadn't traded away the first one) handles Shorts beautifully. Never tried Longs in it. They weren't commonly available even forty years ago, as I recall.

I have a Remington 581 that shoots S L and LR.

I would buy it up in a second if any 22S showed up around here but I have not seen any.

Ive seen a ton of shorts sence this all went down. The funny thing is last year I went LOOKING for them... and everyone looked at me like I was green.. "Shorts? you WANT shorts???" Well now that is [or at least was for a time..] the only thing you could find in 22. I gotta belive that most of the people buying them have no idea that they may or may not load in there firearms..

I'm a big fan of .22 shorts.
I have several rifles that shoot them just fine and one, in particular, that is especially fun to shoot.
It's a Browning ATD, chambered in .22 short and it functions reliably with CB shorts. That's not a typo, CB shorts reliably operate the action. When I bring it to the public range it's not at all unusual for somebody to come over and inquire if the rifle is suppressed. No, it's not, but it sure is quiet-much quieter than my spring action pellet rifles.

Well I just bought a Winchester M-1890 chambered in .22 Short. I'm on the hunt myself.

My inherited Remington Model 121 pump rifle handles shorts nicely. Some of the "Target" shorts made by CCI and Remington are totally quiet when fired out of a rifle yet unlike the various CB shorts actually have reliable killing power.

The .22 Short still has its place today and there's a lot of appeal in any rifle that will flawlessly handle S, L and LR.

I have a Marlin 39M from '63 and a Henry and they will both handle shorts. I have some .22 shorts but just haven't shot the shorts in years.

Now that sounds kinda strange don't it.

I have a few hundred rounds I bought before it got crazy - no more .22 shorts in my area - but they are fun to shoot out of my Wards Westernfield mag fed bolt gun - it is listed as s, l, LR - they feed fine from the magazine as well.

When I was about 6 years old I got my first EVIL HIGH CAPACITY SEMI-AUTO a Winchester 74 chambered for 22Short only.extremely accurate but even though it killed everything I shot with it I traded it for a Remington 512 bolt repeater capable of short, long,LR.It is a wonderful gun but I have finally determined the the Short is my favorite squirrel round. It seems that the LR goes right through and the squirrel may require a second shot. With the Short there is a soft noise followed by a distant "thump" and it's all over.In the few shots hitting the viscera about 8 inches may seem to have been drawn out,as opposed to a clear thru and thru hole from the LR.
UN fortunately I have not seen any shorts for sale either.

I have an old semi winchester model 190 that was handed down to me through the generations. Its one of few semi's i've seen that will actually shoot .22S, .22L, and .22LR without a single problem. Heck i even shoot subsonic .22LR with it when I hunt for those pesky racoons at night at the camp.

To my knowledge I never bought or shot a .22 Short... until a few weeks ago when the LGS was sold out of 22 LR, and no one else had any at all, but the LGS had .22 Shorts. At about $8/100rds., I figured... O.K.! I bought about 1,300 rounds, then found 300 more rounds at a ACE Hardware store. I've fired 100 through my 18-3 and... results were excellent out to the 25 yd. limit of the indoor range. I must admit, compared to $50/500 rs. of .22 LR, those little .22 Shorts are looking good. I'll save the .22 LR for my 15-22 and continue to shoot the .22 Shorts in my revolvers. (I say revolvers because it looks like next week I will be the owner of a 17-3. I had one way back when the world was young, and I guess I just decided to get another one. Hope it likes the .22 Shorts as well as my 18-3 does!
