.22 snap caps

While I can find them by shopping for the only yellow dry wall anchors that are about the right size my box is marked "#4 - #6 x 7/8 in." Their brand is Everbilt from Home Depot. The rims do get smashed but you can use them longer by rotating them in the chamber and they're only about $5 for 150.

Go to Home Depot and buy a bulk pack of the YELLOW smallest wall anchors. Last time I bought some I believe they were about 5 bucks for the box. You need not buy the packs with the screws - they are sold with & without screws.

While I do not doubt KLYDE's story, operating the slide manually, yellow dry wall anchors have fed out of the magazine then extracted out of every .22 LR automatic pistol that I've tried them in.

I am wondering if empty 22 shells could be used???
Usually yes but not if the empties were fired in a chamber that was out of round and or larger than your chamber.

The yellow wall anchors would not fit into the match chamber on my CZ.

Champions Choice has packs of real .22 snap caps. 20 pack for $7.50. Pretty much the same idea as the wall anchor ....except it fits my CZ chamber.

Hmmmm, not doubting you however I use them in my CZ all the time! Maybe the manufacturer who supplies Home Depot has changed the dimensions slightly. Maybe they have a new supplier as well - don't know for sure as I bought so many a year or two ago, I haven't looked lately.

I bought a pack of the Pachmayr snap caps. Junk (sorry Lyman). Semiauto extractors ripped rims off. Revolver extraction did the same. Mine were brittle. Maybe old stock ? I can see where wall anchors would work they are more pliable but have no first hand experience. I save .22 brass and rotate in chamber / cylinder. Get 5-6 hits out of each.

My local ACE Hardware Stores sell Hillard (?) brand wall anchors by the piece, package or box. The yellow ones for #4-6 size screws fit and function in my 1948 vintage K22 and a couple of High Standards (even feeding through the magazine.) At the most expensive, they cost me 11 cents each, and I figure I can get at least 10-15 hits per round, so I guess I can afford it! ;)

I remember being interested in .22 snap caps but when I looked at them, they were not snap caps, like every centerfire caliber. They were marked as function testing rounds. I have used yellow wall anchors satisfactorily but everything suffers from rimfire firing pin strikes and the wall anchors can't be beat for value.
