I have a 22A I bought about a year or so ago. It only has 50 or so rounds through it.

The safety lever on it is extremely stiff, and doesn't really feel like it has any kind of detent to denote Safety on or off. It feels as though it works strictly on friction, and it's so tight you can barely operate it with your thumb.

I'm going to assume this is not proper operation.

Anyone else had this issue?

If your Mod.22A safety is like a Mod. 41 safety your better off having a stiff safety then the other problem which is it shoots loose and engages by itself while you shoot. you squeeze and squeeze and it won't fire. If you ntake left grip off you will see a small flat piece of metal with a detent and small screw. I had to bend mine to make it more stiff so it would not accidently engage. I found out its a common problem. If its used only for target shooting, you realy don't need it. Hope this helps!!! Tony

The 22A does not have a spring loaded detent, it is friction to detent grooves in the lever. You can bend the detent arm, to reduce the friction, which would make it easier to move. Remove the 4 grip screws and then the grip. You will see a side cover plate, on the left side. Lightly bend the lever up, to reduce pressure. Continue until you get the friction you want. This would be a good time to remove the mag safety, if you don't like it. Just pull the top away from the sear arm. slide it down and pull it out when the tabs reach the slots.
