25-2 SN N247XX 79417 stamped on left side inside grip frame below the grip pin.
Page 193 SWSC 3rd gives a 25-2 model change in 1979 as standard barrel catalouged from 6.5" to 6". Then as I understand 1980 dropped the pinned barrel.
Do the letters stamped refer to April 17, 1979?
If that's the case, mine being 6.5", would it be one of the last pinned barrels in the old standard length produced before swapping over to 6"?
I understand the 6.5" could still be special ordered & perhaps this one was I just wondered if there was more of a specific date or SN marking the change over to 6" along w/the elimination of the pinned barrel.
Thanks

Your 25-2 dates to around 1972 and was made ten years before the barrel pin was discontinued for this model. 79417 is the assembly number and is stamped on certain parts to keep them together during the manufacturing process. This number is stamped on the yoke and on the lower left hand corner of the grip frame. The 6-inch barrel was authorized in 1979 and eventually replaced the 6 1/2-inch barrel for this model and the Model 29.

Thanks Doc. I wasn't sure if it was assembly number or a code of manufacture date. I do now though thanks to your help.
Without knowing the date by SN those numbers could fit into the time frame along w/6.5" pinned barrel. Stocks are in the 5K series & off by two numbers amongst them. Anywho I had to ask someone that knew.

Single numbers on the same side of the frame in different type, letters in triangles and circles is somewhat confusing. Now that you pointed it out I see the same number on the yoke.

The letters/numbers inside the circles/triangles are inspector's and fitter's marks. They are common on revolvers produced in the 1970s. Also, the Model 25 was normally shipped with target stocks that were not numbered.

Thank you again sir. These were, based on memory, stamped 5436 & 5438. All the tools/paperwork/cracked blue tub/wooden box were present, so I have no reason to believe these targets did not come w/revolver. Yet, the stamped numbers had me scratching the noodle on occasions.

The number stamped on each stock panel is its part number. When you posted about numbers I was thinking a five or six digit serial number.

I had wondered about that, but my thinking was why would the left & right have different numbers because they would only be purchased as a pair. Can you order just the left or right side stock?

Yet, I can see how in manufacturing the opposed sides could have different numbers.

Thanks again Bill.

I don't know if one panel could be ordered or not, but on the Parts and & Instruction sheet issued for this model and others, each stock panel has its own part number.
