Recently added a 25-5 .45 colt to the collection, one of the later models. It's in great condition hasn't been monkeyed around with. Shooting 250 grain lrn from miwall the gun shoots 3" high from POA at 20 yards. Sights are at the lowest setting.

What are some things I should check?

i believe sight blades come in three different sizes(high, medium, low)you may have to change the rear leaf or try some different loads.

The 25-5 comes with the lowest rear sight blade already installed. I have had this problem with my 25-5 4", and only factory pressure level loads will shoot to point of aim.
Before someone tells me to stick with factory pressure levels, factory loads are well below SAAMI specs. for pressure.

It is a fairly reasonable cost to have a GOOD gunsmith mill out the front sight blade and install a taller, indentical blade in it's place. Otherwise, try filing the top of the rear sight ears down carefully a few thousanths at a time. I have done this and it works great. Don't mess with the bottom of the notch.

thanks for the info, guns4fun. The miwall load is listed at a velocity of 750fps.

The heavier grain weight the bullet is, the higher it hits for two reasons:

1) Loaded to a specific velocity, a higher grain bullet takes more powder and will have more recoil. Theextra recoil means the muzzle will accelerate upward faster at ignition, so the bullet leaves the barrel higher in the arc of the muzzle.

2) heavier mass accelerates slower delaying the exit from the barrel which also raises the point of the muzzle arc where the bullet leaves.

Solution is to go to lighter bullet or mill down the top of the rear sight blade.
