Hello.
I bought this 27-2 (1980 gun) a little while back and was wondering if this is the correct presentation case? He said it was the original case but I don't see many like this, meaning that the gun molding points to the right and it has a hard black plastic insert. I'm always seeing the blue velvet insert types and gun mold pointing to the left....

robdijohn...your case is correct. The photo below shows what it looked like before the deteriorated material covering the soft rubber top and plastic insert in the bottom was removed. This style of case was used from 1979-1985.

Carolina Kid...the presentation case was not added as an accessory to the Model 27-2 until September 1975. If the 27-2 you are buying is earlier, it would have been shipped in a blue cardboard box with an end label showing the serial number and features of the revolver.

Thanks Doc.

Does anyone know when cases with the revolver pointing to the left and the tools in recesses were used. The box is very well constructed using mortises (sp?) instead of dados.

backer...It is hard to give you and answer because the clamshell case was introduced in 1960. The top and bottom inserts went through several iterations before the case we are discussing here was introduced in in 1979.

Just to add to confusion. I've got an unfired blue 6" 27-2 in original wood case (with all factory paperwork/shipping boxes) dated to 1977 and a nickel 27-2 in 8-3/8" 1976 date in factory presentation case. Both have the tools in seperate indents rather than a covered compartment and both are plastic mold blue velvet (flocked?) covered but, the 6" faces left (muzzle) and has one latch whereas the 8-3/8 faces right and has 2 latches. Also have a 29-2 (6-1/2" 1977) with a case identical to the 6" M27 in that the tools are in indents and muzzle faces left. Now....I also have a 1980 M57 in 8-3/8's and that presentation box has the box for tools and the muzzle faces right like the long barreled M27-2. My 1974 6" M57 faces left with tool indents. I have quite a few N frames 1972 thru 1982 and to date have never figured out the rhyme or reasons with the presentation cases.

Rickgto...The 27-2 with an 8 3/8-inch barrel should face to the left in its presentation case. I would love to see a photo of the case with the revolver facing to the right. The case you are describing was introduced in late 74 or early 75 and replaced by the case with the compartment for the accessories in 1979. It has a plastic bottom insert molded in the shape of the revolver and accessories and a plastic top insert that is plain. Each insert is covered with a blue flocking material.

The case shown below is for a 29-2 and dates to September 1976. I have never seen this type of case with the revolver pointing to the right.

And here is a 1976 19-3. I always assumed the K's were only in presentation cases if a limited run or a one off type. I have all the original shipping boxes and reciepts for this revolver too. Maybe a factory option on K models? It's also recovered but the plastic base is intact and definitely K frame. Don't know much about the factory presentation cases so for all I know, some of these may be incorrect for the revolver/year/etc.
