27-2 8 3/8" Opinions

For those that like the long barrels tell me about them. I don't have one but I want one badly. For general shooting and maybe hunting. I think I'm going to want the 3T version.

Give me the pros and cons please. I like this one.

On the pro side, longer sight radius, somewhat increased velocity.
On the con side, beyond 6 inches and the balance is off making it more difficult to shoot. Harder to draw from a holster.

I love them. They are a delight to shoot....

Here's an old photo of some of my long 357s...

And probably one of my all time favorite guns is an 8 3/8" pre-27...

That is my favorite of your revolvers that I've seen too. Just stunning 😎

I have three ~8" revolvers but none are Model 27s.

You folks (especially Richard) kill me, in a good way, when you show your beautiful "long toms"! Unfortunately, I don't own one. I've been collecting for many years and have no real reason for why I don't own one. It's getting kinda late for me to put one on my grail list, but if I find one for the "right" price, I'll definitely pick one up.

Well, I pulled the trigger today. Won this 27-2 for under $750. I'm thinking it will clean up nicely. I'll post a thread when I go pay & pick it up Friday. Yeah me!!

This is a wonderful group of enablers!! Of course I will need to replace the rubbers with some nice target stocks.

I watched that one - well bought. A little Mothers Mag polish, a soft old t-shirt and 1/2 hour or so and that beauty will gleam like a mirror. A set of appropriate grips will really dress her up. That said, hold on to those Pach's as they are nice shooting grips and great for toting your treasure around in the woods (pretty much indestructible).

Congrats!!!

I would have bought that one too! I have a 8 3/8" 629, 57, and pre-27 that I've bought but is still in gun jail. The first two are fantastic shooters and suspect the incoming .357 should be even better.

Great guns. I personally don't care for engraving on handguns. I would be really upset if the gun got scratched and ruined the finish. I never liked the barrels that didn't have a red ramp and white outline rear sight on them. I sold my 27-2 with 31/2 blue because I never hardly ever shot it. I didn't want to paint the front sight and change the rear sight.
I've owned several and been suckered out of a few...Restricting my list to the title topic, here are mine:

Top to bottom: Model 27-2 shipped 5/20/1976...357 Magnum shipped 11/18/1954...Model 27-2 shipped 3/1975...And .357 Magnum shipped 1/27/1953...I have multiple 8 3/8" Smiths in other calibers, but these are all the .357's I have left......Ben
Lucky you!

Are they factory engraved?

Are they factory engraved?
I think I have 3-4, maybe 1/2 dozen long ones (including some 44 Mags) that are factory engraved, but a bunch of the long ones are aftermarket engraved. Factory engraving is nice and I like it, but some of the aftermarket engraving is out of this world nice and I LOVE it. Of the ones pictured in detail above, only this one is factory engraved (it is sporting a set of KB Ropers in this photo):

Question regarding a holster for these long barrels. What maker do y'all use?

45NUTT - Frankly, I have never found a strong side holster I like with the 8 3/8 inch guns. Impractical if you have to sit at all, and can make for a pretty long and awkward draw. Some guys do OK with an angled cross draw, but I am not a big fan.

I like long and heavy handguns in a chest or vertical shoulder holster. Better weight distribution, better draw, and more out of the way. Tons of makes & models. I like the old Safariland, Simply Rugged, Galco, Diamond D, to name a few.

My old long tube model 29 still holds it's own against my PC Hunter model.

I do a little leather craft on the side and I'm going to make a cross draw holster for it. At least, I'm going to give it a shot. :ROFLMAO:

Dang were you wearing a mask when you stole it 😂

I blame this thread. After drooling over the last couple days, a long tube 27-2 popped up on my local forum. Reasonable asking price, and it came home with me.
