27-2 From 1965

In my ongoing, but thus far fruitless search for guns shipped in 1966, I picked this nickle 27-2 up from another forum member.
The SCSW III shows it as a 1966 gun, but the ship date I got from Roy is November 1965

With its little brother a nickle pre-15 shipped October 1955

Still trying to get the hang of photoing nickle guns...gotta get on the light box project

I have a blue 27-2 3 1/2" serial # S282XXX. I do not have a letter, I plan on getting one but I think it is a 66 gun. I picked it up a couple months ago and I don't have a pic yet but it is a 99%+ with box and docs.

I would hazard a guess with that number your gun shipped in 1968, but I would not put anything past Smith when it comes to numbers.

I have S 2978XX that shipped in March of '68, so I believe that Curtis is close here. Maybe late '67 though. With S&W, who knows?

Just curious (newbie) as to why guns from 1966 - sentimental or quality issue -

They are his birth year guns, and he is trying to collect them.

Curtis is a really good man, and does a lot for others here on the forum. I have been doing my best to help him in his quest, but that is a rather tough year to collect it is turning out.

If I helped you in any way, I was more than happy to do so.

Perhaps a more qualified member could answer that for you, but I believe that as far as time frame goes, the period right around '66 would be it, since the company had just been sold to Bangor Punta in '65, and transition periods can be difficult, with products added, dropped etc as well as a change in leadership ideas of how things should be done.

1966 Birth year

This is turning out to be a bitch of a year to collect (go figure) I know of only 3 29's known to have shipped in 1966. I have looked on a database and there were several guns from 66, but aint no one turning loose of them.

I did find a 29-2 in the right SN range, but it is open on the books so there is no record to letter the gun off of. Contrary to popular belief this was not an uncommon occurrence prior to 1968.

BTW the All Model Circular pictured dates to 3/66. I may take some pics of the pages.

Model 29-2s in the S270000-S279000 range stand a pretty good chance of being shipped in 1966.

I just got a ship date on one in the S279XXX range and it shipped March of 1968
