I have a very nice 27-2 #N347xx with 6.5" barrel. In trying to date it, my S&W book 3rd edition shows the 6.5" barrel being discontinued in 1967. And in 1969 was changed to "N" serial prefix. Mine has 6.5" barrel and is "N" prefix. Anyone help me understand this? Would be great if someone could date it for me. Thank you guys, keith

The third edition book shows serial #s N300000 from 1975-1976 so you might have a 1975 model 27? just a thought. Ron.

27-2 6 1/2"

Don't be alarmed--like a lot of things in the SCSW, not entirely accurate. I have N46638 shipped in April of '72. Consider yourself fortunate--dash 2s in 6 1/2" are hard to come by.

What Jim said is the what I seen as well, I've had a couple of 6.5 M27's with the Nxxxxx (5 digits) serial numbers from the early 70's.

They may have discontinued the 6.5 M27 from the line up in 1967, but they obviously had a box of barrels that lasted them well into the early 70's

I own N382xx, and it also has a 6.5" barrel; manufactured well after the "cut off" date. Never say "never".

The 6.5" barrel is observed into 1975 or 1976. Maybe later but not noted that I have seen.
