Plan to look at a 27-2 tomorrow that I might add to my collection. Its a 3.5 or 4" nickel, diamond magnas. Couple of questions, were diamond magnas a standard offering and ,if so, should they be numbered to frame? Were 27-2 4 screw or 3 screw? Anything else I should look for?
Thanks

A 4" should not have diamond Magnas. They only made the 4"for a couple years, something like '79 and '80 if memory serves. The diamond Magnas were from the '60s and before. They are VERY collectible, and should be worth a lot more than a 3 1/2".
Either barrel length is very desirable. If the price is right buy it.
The M27-2 is a 3 screw.

Diamond Magna stocks were standard until about 1966-67. Non-diamond Magnas were then standard until 1975, when target stocks, target triggers, target hammers and the presentation case became standard equipment.

Yes, Magna stocks were numbered to the gun, but only on the back of the right panel.

Well, thought this gun had gone away; but back in play. Descibed as " very good to great" condition,( have not seen in person yet) 3.5" barrel, nickel, S serial # and owner says it dates to 1966-67. Original diamond magnas. No box.Anybody want to offer their take on a current value? Prices seem to be all over the place on GB.
Thanks

That is a very desirable gun, the kind that tends to get really run up in auctions. $800-$900 most days I would guess. Don't let it get away.

The gun can sell easily in the $1200 range in high condition, even w/o the box, tools, and papers. Add $200+ with that stuff. I'd buy all I could get my hands on for $800.

Well, some people's "great " condition is not so great. Gun had original grips that are dinged pretty good on bottom, rear sight leaf dinged and finish pretty tarnished that would probably clean up leaving a little light pitting in places. Probably could be put in to good " shooter" condition.
Now whats it worth?

Around 1967'ish.

Now Let's see the pictures so I can feel bad for not having one.

Would love another S pre-fix Model 27 and nickel too!

Have you given it a little love with some Flitz or Mothers Mag Polish?

Did a quick first pass w/ a little Mother's love. Pics to follow when I get some daylight.

Cleaned up MUCH better than expected, glad I changed my mind! I think I did good.

I was feeling "pretty" good, but I just picked up a 98% condition, Model 547, 3" round butt. Now I feel REAL good about myself!
Good weekend for Smith buying.
