There is a small gap below the back strap on my stocks. I thought they might not be origional to the gun, but now I'm seeing a few more around with the same gap. I'm kind of a novice collector and was wondering if anyone could tell me if this gap is common. I know to have the gun lettered would tell me what kind of stocks it shipped out with, but thats not too important as long as this gap is common and not a miss fit.

Thanks Scott

I'll bite as the gap is not uncommon on S&W grips but those grips are usually not found on Model 27-2's but could have been special ordered or changed out after the purchase.

it's not really common...........but it's not that uncommon either.

Odds are the gun would not letter as having those grips on it when it left Springfield.

I have a nickle 4" 27-2 with smooth targets and my gap is about a 16th of an inch.. My 6" 27-2 blued has check targets and their is no gap.. Hope this helps

I have a set of smooth N frame targets,80's vintage with a small gap also.I'll trade you for a set of checkered GA stocks if it bothers you!

Thanks for the replies. Don’t get me wrong, I really love the looks of the smooth stocks :). As soon as I can swing it, it’s second in line to get lettered. I think if it was shipped out with smooth targets, these must be them. Thanks for all the input.
