I have been asked a value question on a 27-2 3 1/2 inch revolver. It is in good shape and has been given an action job by a top flight pistol smith who also jeweled the hammer and trigger as was common 30 or 40 years ago. This revolver is a great shooter and otherwise in at least 90 to 95% condition. What does the Forum think a fair value would be to both seller and buyer. This is part of an estate of a good man whose widow is trying to sell a number of guns. She needs to maximize these , but wants to be fair to all concerned. Your thoughts please.

I haven't see one sell, I fact haven't seen 31/2" 27 of any dash
in this area. From the forums that seems to be the most desirable
one. I haven't seen any nice 27-2s under $1200 in any barrel
length. I would expect a 40yr old 27-2 in hi condition 31/2" to
go north of $1200.

Don't know how the jeweling would affect value. Could you post some photos? The grips would also affect value. We need more info.

The stocks are factory target correct to the revolver.

Add 25 to 50% for being a 27 dash 2 compared to other dash numbers excluding dash 1. Add another 20% for the 3 1/2" barrel length. Wish I knew more.

I know of a couple of folks that have recently posted about buying a 27-2 on these forums, with myself being one of them. I bought a nickel 27-2 last month off GB that came with the silver cardboard box plus a presentation case and both box and presentation case came with tools. And the cardboard box tools are still in the plastic wrapper and it has the documentation that S&W shipped with them back in the 1973-1974 time frame, which is when mine was shipped. I paid $1795 for mine.

In the case of your widow friend, it is hard to say. Does she have the box, tools and paperwork the revolver shipped with? Does it have a presentation case? As far as the jeweled trigger and hammer goes, in my opinion that devalues the gun. The gun would be worth more with case hardened hammer and trigger installed. If you could possibly take some pics of the gun and post them it would help giving a guesstimate on value, as well as posting whether it's just the pistol or if it has a box, tools and documentation.

I'd go 700 tops with the jeweled parts, which devalue.
90- 95 %.... which?

This would just be a shooter, It has no real collectible value, whether it has box or not.

If you want a shooter, Id offer her 650 and go to 700. It would be a great shooter, or carry gun.

Box, tools and docs would mean nothing to me, personally, on this particular gun.

luvsmiths, that's pretty much a lowball offer for a 27 P&R gun in great shape. I was checking out GB last night for model 28's and shooter grade model 28's were going for that kind of money (bids on the auctions). Even with the jeweled trigger and hammer, a 27-2 3 1/2" will move on GB for over $1000 nowadays. After all, you can pick up a new trigger and hammer and replace the jeweled parts for well less than $200.

A collector will have zero interest in this gun, and many s&w enthusiasts would love to get their hands on it for short money to be a shooter or high class carry piece. In reality, though, that revolver is hard to come by and will have many interested buyers who just want to have a 3.5" 27-2. I've probably owned 8-10 of them over the years (not nearly as many as some of the accomplished collectors on the Forum), and still have two in the safe. They are not impossible to find in these parts, but I know many members who have never run into one at the local shops where they live.

If the goal is to get money to the widow (a good deed by you, in my book), a price around $1000 would be fair and would generate immediate interest. I don't see the point in trying to get $400-500 more, but having to wait two months for the right buyer to find it. Could the best price be $1100 or $1200, I don't know. But that is a fair range in this area. I hope this helps.

Looks like two things going on. One is as a collector piece, the short barrel and condition are pluses but the jeweled hammer and trigger negate that and actually devalue the gun more than a standard gun so no add and a possible deduction from normal value. The second is as a nice shooter. For me the shorter barrel takes away from that so another lower price. For a shooter I would hold out for a longer barrel. So I would offer or expect $600-850 tops for the gun. That said, someone that likes jeweled parts will probably buy it for$1000-1200 if you want to wait for that buyer.

This is a fair price in my area. Maybe a bit more. 1200.00 and up around here. There would be people fighting over it for anything under 1000.00. No matter the jeweled hammer and trigger.
