Hello all I purchased a 27-2 with a 6in barrel. The gun isn't a safe queen it's a shooter grade gun. The bluing is decent has some rust on the cylinder where it has sat for some time and neglected. I purchased it from a friend his father had it and passed away. I've been trying to clean the rust off using pb blaster and very fine steel wool. What is a good estimate on value? Thanks

Shooter grade......... depends...... I got a 4" Shooter grade 27 last fall for $600 out the door.... $550 at a small local gun shop. I felt it was under priced at that price; but the owner wanted to move some guns, and I've been a good customer for 20 years.

If it is a light rust, just use 0000 steel wool and oil, gently. If it is just a bit of surface rust, consider using (lightly applied and polished) Flitz with your finger and a cotton cloth to wipe off (only a small dab needed).
It's hard to say value wise without a photo.
These are sought after guns and that is a great balance with the 6".
With rust, I would say it is worth no more than $700....probably would sell around $625.....but what an exceptional woods gun or deer hunting gun!

I believe the prices are spot on you were given here. You wrote that the bluing was decent with rust spots on the cylinder. $700 would be a reasonable price without knowing more.
How is the barrel? the trigger? the lockup? B/C gap? forcing cone? grips? crane fit?
The 27 is a seriously great gun. If the internals are good, you can get your money out in a flash. Prices appear to be going up.

DON'T use Steel wool! Use either brass or bronze wool.
As for value, it's worth exactly what you paid for it. Just enjoy your new revolver.

I will get some pictures tomorrow. The gun is very tight the mechanicals are spot on with the usual smith great trigger. The finish is just neglected. I wanted to make sure to make a good deal on it. I don't want to pay too much and him not make enough. Thanks for the help.

Barrel length and cylinder considered, anywhere from $850 ~ $1000 IMO.

You never mentioned a price. If it was right, it would be worth doing. The cylinder could possibly be cold blue touched up. Regardless, it is only a "shooter grade" gun. I myself still like it. I have a 6" 28 no dash from 1960. Wanted a 27, with no luck finding the right 1. They are awesome. Let us know how you make out! Bob
Looking at the pictures......... "around here" that would be in a LGS for between $600-650 IMO..... the price of a "nice" Model 28........ and would sit awhile if there were any nicer K,L or N frame .357s in the case.
He might get $400 no more than 500 in trade or selling it to a LGS.

As Bam-Bam said, if he takes it to a gun shop he will not get more than $500. More likely, they will really low-ball him to the tune of $200 - $300. They will say "Revolvers just don't sell any more, the rust will scare away collectors, it's too big and heavy for concealed carry, blah, blah, blah." In their defense, it may indeed be on their shelf a long time.
Most of us say that any N-Frame S&W is worth $500 if it is in good functioning condition. Obviously, this one is a cut above that. My wild guess at a fair price between friends is $600.

I think it would be a quick sell on GunBroker at seven to eight hundred. If you sold the stocks alone on eBay or GunBroker, you would quickly net a hundred and fifty.
I'm going to place value at $500 - that is a common model / barrel length with finish issues that will be pricy to correct. No doubt it will be a good shooter but not one that brings a premium price.
It doesn't appear to look too bad in the photo. 750-775.

Considering that real nice 6" model 27-2s are $1000-$1200 guns, I think this one would be in the $500 - $700 range.
The 6" barrel makes it a great range gun, but they were common, and there are other lengths that collectors really want.
M personally, I would not go more than $550, but that is me.

Keep it and do not worry about the value! They are fantastic shooters! My 6' bbl. model is a tack driver and I love it. Bought it a few years ago and, actually, cannot remember what I gave for it but, it is not for sale.
I just joined the forum , I have several S&W revolvers.I have a model 27-2 with 3.5 inch barrel in mint condition my father bought for me in 1976.The gun has only been fired a couple dozen times.It is not for sale , but I was wondering if anyone knows its value, TH and TT. I also just bought a model 65-3 3inch new in the box, I don't think they make them anymore would like to know its value if anyone knows.

Show us some pictures and so one here will give you a good estimate. Is it blued or nickel? Do you still have the presentation box and paperwork? All these things will determine the value.

That is less than what I paid for my Highway Patrolman 28-2 four years ago.
You did great for $500.

I do not have the box or papers, and have no way to post pics. the gun is blued with deep shiny bluing. From what I can find the 3.5 inch barrel must be pretty rare ,I can't find any for sale with that barrel length on the internet.
There are some on gunbroker right now, but unfortunately the search function on that site is not working very good right now, and we can't post links to current auctions.
Popular length but not rare IMO. At least not in -2 version.
