Me and my shooting buddies have several Smiths from the old PPC and bullseye days with aftermarket barrels that we have accumulated through the years going to gun shows and also online sales. Some were made by notable gunsmiths and some with no name at all. We really enjoy benchresting them and trying out our reloads with them. It has been a fun and never ending pursuit experimenting with the latest cast bullet mold.
All these Smiths we own were built on either K or L frames. The other day I found online a 27-2 with a ten inch bull barrel at a price I couldn't pass on even though I could tell it had a parkerized finish with some discolorations. Also after I received it I discovered the stocks were glued to the frame of all things! I pried one of them off but to take the other one off will be a chore. It's glued on there with some kind of black gunk type glue or silicone.
Have any of you ever seen a model 27 with an aftermarket barrel?
Also do any of you know what the stamp "300 GS" on the bottom of the barrel signifies?

There was a 300 Gunsmith shop in Denver, run by Fred Sadowski who died in 1982.

I don't know what one would do with a 10" barrel and what looks like a shotgun fibre optic bead.

Thanks for the info, the gun came from just east of Colorado Springs.

*1 on the Denver shop. What to do with it? Shoot it like a rifle at 100 yards off the bench! Too bad about the glue. I would look into some gentle solvent (no recommendations) and replace the stocks if too damaged.

I found the following from a former employee of the 300 Gunsmith Shop.

"Frederick A Sadowski passed away on March 1, 1987. I left 300 in June of 1987. 300 Gunsmith Service continued on for several years under new ownership, but failed eventually. Fred and I, along with several apprentices, did action work on numerious firearms, including S&W, Colt, Ruger, Dan Wesson, Charter Arms and many others. Not only did we do action work, we also did considerable rifle and shotgun work. We had an extensive article done in 1985 by Shooting Times."

You might want to try some acetone to break that grip/stock loose. It also may help remove the gook after you have both grips off. It is the same as nail polish removal for the Ladies. You can get it in any home/hardware store like Home Depot.

I have a very nice S&W Model 10-7 made into a PPC Revolver by Master Gunsmith Mr. Ken Eversull from somewhere in and or abouts Louisiana. Last heard he had stopped PPC guns and now working on high grade shotguns.

That is a new sight for me too. I don't recall ever seeing a 27 with an aftermarket barrel. BUT... at the right price, that one would have come home with me as well.

I look forward to seeing some photos when you get it all cleaned up.

Thanks for sharing,

I don't mind telling. It was $500 plus shipping. It will look much better after I get through with it.

Heat. Depending on the type of glue, it should loose it's grip around 180-250 degrees. Use a heatgun and slowly bring temp up. Should be able to do w/o messing up the wood. Will likely ruin the finish especially if you touch the grip while hot. Concentrate the heat on the metal and keep it moving. If u can get the grip screw out, get a longer screw that will leave you something to tap on to keep your fingers off of the grips.

The finish on the gun is not Parkerizing or blueing, but paint of one type or another.

Those look like Nill grips to me. High quality, German made, probably of rosewood.

I would agree with the poster above who said to use heat to break the grip free from the frame.

I've had luck using a good blow dryer to loosen gooey glue and I would try that first...

Good luck,

I got the grip off by heating up the frame with a propane torch. It came right off and was held with silicone.
Warren Sear was right, it is paint on the gun instead of some other applied finish.
Is there any way I can take the paint off without sanding? I don't want to mess up the finish underneath if I don't have to.

This bull barrel is 1 1/16" diameter at the muzzle.

Serial is, N4105xx

Disassemble it and put the frame, barrel and sideplate into a sealed container full of acetone and let it sit a few days.

A few members have posted pictures of their Smolts or Smythons made by installing Python barrels on N frames but IIRC the revolvers were Model 28s.

I removed paint off a .348 Winchester with ordinary paint remover and a rag. I got lucky. The original bluing underneath was in very good to excellent condition. However, my guess is that bull barrel will be bare metal after you remove the paint.

I would suspect that your Model 27 was built up to serve as a long-range (200m) revolver for IHMSA matches. Considering that IHMSA was more popular out west, the location fits. That front sight looks like a RayBar bead that could be found on almost any Ithaca Model 37. I would suspect that configuration revolver would be a joy to shoot freestyle! Visualize shooting that in a Bisley-style prone position!

I considered the possibility, but a 200 meter pistol shot calls for a lot of sight elevation and it doesn't look like this gun has the capability.

Nice gun! Look like they could be old Mustang or Eagle grips, but I don't really know.

I'm a lazy guy, I'd put the other grip back on, leave the paint alone, and shoot the heck out of it.

The best I can tell this bull barrel is a 1:14 twist as opposed to the factory 18.75 twist. My cleaning rod turned 3/4 of the way around in its ten inch length.
