27 5"

I have a chance to buy a blued Model 27 with a 5" barrel, red ramp & service grips that is in excellent condition without the box for 700.00. Is this a good deal or not?

Pictures would help a lot. . .but as described a good price. Last 5 inch blue I bought was $300 but that was 12 or more years ago. I'd be a buyer at $700 if truly excellent; which means to me 98% or better finish.

Edit: Your post says Model 27 and doesn't mention a dash number. Most any high quality 5 inch 27 is worth $700 these days but the older P&R models are the most sought after. Most I see are 27-2s.

It is a S prefix that was made in 1964 so I would assume that it is pinned and recessed.

S prefix always adds a nice premium to the price.
If it is really in nice condition, I'd say it's worth the $700.
I bought a 27-3 4" recently for $700, but I think the 4" barrels are more desirable than the longer ones.

Yes, if it is in the condition you describe, especially being an earlier version of a 27-2, it is well worth $700, even without the box. The 5 inch is a great compromise between the 3.5 and 6" barrels. If you want it, jump on it. You are definitely not getting screwed.

I didn't think there were many non-P&R 5" guns made.

My 5" 27-2 is amazingly well balanced for a large frame revolver.

To my eyes, the 5" barrel on the N sized frame just looks better that the 4" version.

Don't forget to post pictures once you get her home.

The 5" is probably the best balanced of all the Model 27's. I've found that the 4" seems a bit weighted toward my hand, and the 6-6.5" models have that extra front-end weight.
