Hey Folks,
I just picked up a 28-2, and upon looking more closely at it, the forcing cone looks like it was sort of beveled on the outer edge. None of my other Smiths look like this. It is evenly done all around so I would think it was intentional. Almost looks like the beginnings of threads if you look close.

Any thoughts why this is so?

Overall the condition is quite good, and I hope to try shooting it this week. I was in Cabelas of all places, and they had it listed for half of what they are going for on G-B, so I jumped on it.

Best-

Paul

Even though they are not with me yet. From the seller's pictures, both my newly aquired 1955 25-2 from 1972 and my 27-2 are also beveled.

I'd noticed that the my 28-2 w/ the 6" barrel is beveled at the rear of the barrel at some point in the past. I guess I just assumed it was a nice finishing touch that S&W did at the time and didn't give it any more thought.
When I read this thread I knew right away that the 6" in barrel, S/N 125XX , was as described by the OP. But I had to go check on the 4", S/N1716XX, it too is beveled.
It's funny, I'd never seen this written about before.
This why I'm always hanging around here, I like the info that I find.
Although I'm not sure what good some of this info is. :D

I have two 28-2's, both '70s vintage. FWIW My 4" 1973 date N174XXX is beveled. My 6" late '70s N534XXX is not.

Those are from back in the day when S&W did the extra little steps that finished the gun.
That's the strange thing; I have an early HP that is not. And a late '70s that is not. All others are beveled. S&W strikes again?

NOT BEVELED
HP ……. 6" date: '54 - '55
28-2 … 6" date: '78

BEVELED
28-2 … 4" date: '65
28-2 … 4" date: '70 - '72
28-2 … 4" date: '72
28-2 … 6" date: '72 - '74

Question on terminology:
Did S&W use "chamfered" or "beveled"? Just wondering.

In a thread some time ago, a member mentioned this forcing cone chamfering as well as the chamfering at both ends of the cylinder. He was curious as to whether all HPs / M28s were chamfered in all three places.

The 28-2 6" #N4427X , i bought new years ago, has the bevel. Never noticed it till i read this thread.
