Today at a small show I received my second Mod. 28 in the last few weeks! When it rains it pours! A bit of a puzzle to me is the serial number, instead of an N at the start of the serial number it starts with a S. S281332 I thought that all the N frames started with an N. Six inch barrel, counter sunk rims and pinned barrel. The grips look like they were tossed into a cement mixer, they are the small football grips and are so worn they are missing about half the height of the checkering. What is odd is the gun almost appears unfired! No indication around the fireing pin hole and no flash on the front of the cylinder, none around the barrel, and there isn't even wear on the cylinder lock area. It was just starting to get a bit of rust going on the extractor, but hardly could call it rust as a bore brush cleaned it right up, it looked real dirty and it is looking like it had never been cleaned. Should see all the dust in the action after I removed the grips. Don't think the grips had ever been off, I thought I was going to shear the screw off before it finely started turning. Will have to do a bit of restoration on the grips, like recuting the checkering and finish, just noticed a small chip out of the left one. Will have to fix that! Is this an early one because of the S in the serial number? Best regards, the toolman.

It may have come from the factory with those stocks or a previous owner put them on because they fit his hands better. Probably no way to know other than sending for a factory letter. Even then you wouldn't know for sure that someone didn't take off the originals and put on those beaters.

That's funny, I did the very same thing earlier this year. Just a few weeks apart. One found at a local gunshow and one found on a local guntrader website.

My online dealer had three m28's, two m28-0 & one m28-2. Couldn't pass them up.

Mine is a 28-2. It does have a N prefix for the serial number.
