Stocks are not original S&W, but appear to be the older style Herrett's Shooting Star stocks. Finish shows a fair amount of wear and there may be some freckling on the hammer and trigger. It is definitely shooter grade, not a collector piece. I'd say somewhere in the area of $600 to maybe $700.

I bought one, also a 4 inch with S SN although a little later (1967ish) a couple months ago for $650 with a box of ammo. Also came with factory target stocks but ones with speed loader cutout so not correct for the gun but probably worth about as much as the correct ones that I put on it. Condition looks roughly the same. Good luck.

SWCA #1457

$700 maybe on a good day. One with matching stocks, box, docs and tools in exl. condition will be around eight fiddy. I just picked one up from GB for that price. No other bids so I know they aren't in great demand......yet.

The S&W "Highway Patrolman" was introduced in 1954 as a budget priced .357 Magnum that would appeal to law enforcement as well as civilians, but was cheaper than the fancier ".357 Magnum" revolver. S&W began using model numbers in 1957, so the ".357 Magnum" revolver became the Model 27 and the "Highway Patrolman" became the Model 28. Yours is a fairly early Model 28-2 (-2 introduced in 1961), and would probably have shipped wearing smaller walnut diamond magna stocks. "S" s/n 28-2s from the early to mid-60s generally have a higher price tag than later "N" s/n Model 28-2s (N s/n began 1969), and I think yours would be in the $700-$800 range, even with the wear and the aftermarket Herrett stocks (which are nice, BTW). Most of my modest collection of HPs are Model 28-2s, except for my first year (1954) and birth year HP.

To the OP, thank you for sharing. A classic revolver. Many quite understandably, though not myself, crave the larger grips for their larger hands.

For me, Magnas are great, especially if in elk stag by one of our esteemed members, KD. Last summer, mine with such "small" grips was commendably accurate at 200 yards offhand. Yes, it was a lucky day - lucky to have a nice 28 such as yours, lucky to have beautiful grips - and all on beautiful day with good friends.

Thank you again.

It's an awesome gun and very desirable. In Western Kentucky it would go for $700 to $800. Of course, if I were buying it, I would try to talk you down to $200 for the fun of buying.
