Friend of mine who lives in Chicago ran across a 4" 28-2 at a gun shop (outside of Chicago and one that deals a lot in pistols) being described as ANIB with a firm asking price of $950.00. Seems a "bit" on the high side to me and IMO makes my latest HP purchase (28-2) look like a real bargain at $489.00:

Sounds higher than a cat's back to me!!

No way in hell, try cutting that price in half! That guy is trolling for a sucker with more cash than brains who sees an old S&W and just buys it without knowing anything.

What does he think it's a 27?

28's are going up in price, but quite a few were made over the years, as it was S&W's "workhorse" .357 for nearly 30 years for both police and sport shooters. I don't think people will ever pay $1,000 for a 6" M28, if they start, then I am afraid of what will happen to the prices of everything else........"artificial inflation" is a dangerous thing, once dealers get wind that people will drop $1K on something that should be $4-500 then they will jack prices up.

Same thing here in CO. I saw a 28 in decent shape for $700 and a well worn one for $595. The kicker is a 27 in great shape was $710 sitting right next to the 28's. Back home in MO I never saw a 28 over $475. But I also saw a refinished old m&p .38 for $450 at the same store. And another store around the corner had a rough 19 for $475. Needless to say, I haven't bought any guns out here.

You should ought to see what them Colorado gun vendors do when they go to a Wyoming gun show.

My Momma raised some dummies, but they was my sister.

She lives in Granby:D

Not the first one I've heard of over 9 bills. A high profile advertiser in Gun Digest (formerly known as Gunlist) has been running one monthly
It's there now, 995, listed as ANIB (light cylinder line).

The very next ad is another 28-2, 99% for 495. I never dreamed I see one at 5 bills, much less 9+ !

I do have some idea that I would rather pay 500+ for a anib 28-2 instead of any current new production 357. Something to think about.

I hope it's delicious because he is going to end up eating it at that price. You couldn't even get that in California. MAYBE if it was a new in box 27, you could find a fool drunk enough to pay that... but the 28 is the cheapo version of the 27. Nobody will pay that for a 28.

I would love to pay $500 for just about any older SW revolver like new with forged parts and no lock compared to current production..... I would even pay $600 out here in kali for a really nice piece.

You can say that again - I picked up a 28-2 NIB with box and tools for under $500 here in the bay area a couple gears ago.

28's are the Model 10's of the N-frames.......S&W made plenty of 'em and they were made to be economical workhorse duty guns. I don't pay Barbeque Gun price for a gun that was made to be a shooter and a holster gun. I have never failed to see a 6" 28 at a gun show in the $500 range and it's not like people were fighting over them.

I have 3 28's, paid $370 for a shooter grade 4" and I was reluctant to do that but I wanted one I could beat on and lower priced 4" are harder to find.....also got a really nice 6" for just under $400 and a S&W factory reblued and re-worked 6" N-prefix, for all intents and purposes is a new gun, for just under $500.

The "Classic" 27's are about $1K and I think that's just insane, those look more like new versions of the 28, and once again, why buy that when nice originals are half that?

Saw a very minty 4" S prefix today for $650 and thought THAT was high! Six inch...$900+...Oh come on!

There are several nice looking 6" 27's that have relisted over and over unsold on GunBroker for $700 Buy Now's, it's not like people are breaking their mouse buttons buying those.....

I just bought a 28 no dash from a forum member, in mint condition for $575.
Build date around 1957 with diamond magna's. 4-screw gun. It is in shipment now and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

In the late 70's and eraly 80's every gunshow dealer had a M/28 on their table, you could hardly give them away for $250.00. They used to be the "red headed step-child" of S&W revolvers. How times have changed!
