Was a 5 inch barrel ever avalabile for a Model 28? There is one for sale locally and the guy claims it has a 5 inch barrel. It's a -2 blued gun. I have seen one pic. It's a shooter grade. It looks like the muzzle has some wear on it. It has the older diamond grips on it. What would the gun be worth (no box etc).

In regular production the 28 only came in 4" and 6" barrels. The book does mention a special order of a few units in 5" nickel for a law enforcement agency, plus we all know to "never say never" were S&W is concerned. However, more than likely this one is a chopped barrel.

Another possibility is the individual is measuring the barrel from the end of the frame instead of from the face of the cylinder, about an inch difference in length.

I reached out to the guy and that is exactly what he did. It's a 6 inch. He wants $550 for it. I think that is a bit high.
