28-2 With Box and Docs

Having a Red Ramp on that gun doesn't ding it all in my opinion.

That's a Real Nice 28.

Most 28s are not in that nice of an original condition, especially with the accompanying accoutrements (Box/Papers). Most were issued, carried and used in some line of duty.

Back in the day they were considered Plain-Jane guns, especially when compared the bluing quality and beauty of the Python, the 27-2 and the 29-2, but looking at your pics, the 28-2 is a definite beauty in its own right, and doesn't look budget at all with its nice finish and wood grips.

That finish looks better than average to me.

No doubt that there is a lot of variation in the original finish quality of the M28s. My best guess is that it all depended on who was working that day, how busy the shop was, etc.

It just showed up one day at the LGS that I used to do a lot of business with before relocating to Texas. I was looking for a 4" N frame .357 and this fit the bill, the box and docs were like an added bonus. It is kind of a time capsule, like somebody bought it back then, put it on a shelf and forgot about it. It is finished a bit nicer than most 28HP's that I have seen, then again this one is about flat new.

Seems to have a lot nicer finish than the one I just bought unfired in the box made in mid 70's.

This is after a coat of Ren wax too.

My old 28 that I carried for several yrs has a PLUM colored barrel, a cylinder with most of the finish worn off, yet the fame is still fairly matte black. Like a tri-color.

I like red ramp front sights and guns with a consistent finish. Mine is going back to Smith tomorrow for a refinish and a red ramp frt sight install.

The finish on mine is how it came. I will try to find where I put the factory letter and see where it was shipped. The front red ramp looks no different than any other N frame red ramp that I have had over the years, or at least I didn't think so. I do not have another one right now to compare it to,

Very nice 28 you have there! I won a 6" on G.B. a few years ago. No dash shipped 1960. No box or anything. But it looks and shoots good. My main concerns. My only regret is that it does not get shot that often. Bob

Factory installed inserts are the same thickness front to rear, and not thicker in front slimming to the rear as yours appears to be, still a nice shooter, but that's what it is as collectors would balk at the cut front sight.

Nice looking revolver. I have a recently acquired, lightly used 28-2 with a six inch barrel that I really like. If you choose to get rid of this one, just let me know.

I ordered a new set of grips from Smith and Wesson for my M28, I like them and will like having a choice, but for the 28, I really prefer the service grips.

One thing that I found out was that the service grips that are on my M28 do not number to the gun! They are the same as new condition as the M28 and I always assumed that they were the original grips.
