I just acquired a 28-2 Highway Patrolman still in the box, unfired. How do I tell the year the handgun was manufactured and the history of the weapon.

Please provide the Serial number info with the last three digits x'ed out, like this.

S123xxx or N12xxx

We can get it close after that. You can also search here and look up the Ultimate Highway Patrolman thread and that should provide lots of info.

Welcome aboard and here is a first post like. Oh, and we need pictures!

Someday I too hope to find a nice Highway Patrolman to bring home - hey that did not sound right... But you know what I meant. Classic Smith for sure.

Welcome to the Forum. We like Highway Patrolman revolvers around here. Heck, I have one in my IWB holster right now.:D
Check the bottom of the butt for the serial number. It should have an N before it. If you have target stocks on it you will have to remove them to see number.

Thanks alot FR - I have Merlot stains on my monitor now:D

The Serial # is S288xxx. It has the orignal grips and no turn line on the cylinder. I will try and post a few photos shortly. Thanks for the information.

rr, Congratulations, and welcome to The Forum! I recently purchased a 28 no dash, #S2011xx, from 1960. ACCURATE, even with me pulling the trigger! Let us know how she shoots! Bob

I happen to have a pretty pristine 28-2 myself that I have owned for about 30 years. I also happen to have the Mahogany presentation box the my model 29 came in and the 28-2 fits in it perfectly. I am interested in selling it. Would you mind my asking what you paid for yours? Any readers interested in it also?
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, you've landed in good company.

Very nice find with your 28. These have quite a following around here, so you won't be alone. There's more information than you can digest in a month in the threads on here, so get your reading glasses out. ;)

The Model 28-2 is a much loved revolver up here and it is exactly the same revolver as the Model 27-2 without the stop strap checkering and high luster blue. But mechanically they are identical.

I have been offered $550.00 for my 28-2. After reading many posts, I think the offer is a good one. What do you all think?

I think if they're willing to pay $550 now, where will that price be in a couple years. Don't do it man, unless you have another one, you'll regret selling it as soon as it walks out the door. Made that mistake with a CS-1, traded it for "something better" and regretted it as soon as I left the shop. Those guns are now seeing prices over a grand, making it very hard to find or afford another one.

Congrauations on your new purchase. The Model 28 is one of the greatest values in handguns. I am the original owner of a Model 28 which I purchased in 1973. It would be the last handgun I would sell.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your HP! If the gun doesn't hold much interest for you, go ahead and sell. I personally would not. They are finely crafted weapons, very accurate, and a classic. S&W doesn't make them like it any more! Check out the Ultimate Highway Patrolman thread in the stickys in this section. Trust me, you will learn a lot!

Kenny, I bought my 28 no dash for $450 in Dec, super clean! It would take $650 + to make me even think about selling it. F.W.I.W Bob

I have a 6in 28-2 s prefix serial mint. I would trade for a 4in 586 -4 . I have not shot it much since I got a686-1. I like shooting 686 more.
