I picked up a 29-10 50th Anniversary in the presentation box unfired…A beautiful piece except for that Awful gold anniversary logo on the side plate. I will be calling S&W to see if I can order a replacement side plate. I don't usually ask for opinions but in this case interested in your opinion.
Thanks
Capt Jack

You might get lucky and the replacement side plate might have an acceptable fit and finish. Then again, it may not fit at all, it may fit with some gaps present, it may sit above or below the level of the frame.

It just seems like a shame to me.

Flip the 29-10 unfired commemorative for a nice profit, buy a cosmetically challenged 29, and send it to Ford's...

Somebody gets a nice commemorative and you get a nice shooter.

Win-win for everybody.

John

thats an idea… not sure about the profit part but if it paid for the Ford bluing i'm ok with that.
I sent Ford a picture to see if they would just blue the existing side plate, i am concerned about the fit of a different side plate.

the other thing about disliking the gold rollmark, seems like the non anniversary models are worth more…dont think i'm the only one with this affliction.

I've been around long enough to see many guns that were unpopular at the time they were new, become desirable and collectible because of their "rarity" a number of years later.

If you are intent on changing out the side plate, call Smith & Wesson and ask if it is something their shop can do. This way, you are likely to get the best result. If they will not do this for you, I'd sell that gun and buy one you'll be happy with. Someone else would probably appreciate that gun more than you do.

Side plate swapping is more a thing of luck since each side plate is mated to and finished with the frame at the factory.

waiting to hear back from Fords guns…if they will reblue i will have a very unique 50th anniversary…since it is unfired, probably will not shoot in either case. I have many other 44mags to shoot.
I just needed a project since fishing is slow right now.

Since you will not shoot it, but you are going to modify and refinish it, you will end up spending lots of time and money on something that will be worth less than it is right now. There is probably someone with money who would love to buy that Model 29, but only in original condition.
