I looked at a unbelievable 29-2 today at a LGS on consignment. The gun was basically unfired. It is a one owner gun. Early to mid 70s birth date. The blueing was excellent, came with the original display case, tools and paperwork.

Price tag was $2,200. Little more than I wanted to spend and did not. But you don't see ones come around like this everyday. I'm also looking at a model 58 41 magnum which is considerably cheaper, by a grand, and almost in the same condition and age. I'm leaning towards the
model 58 41 magnum.

Any thoughts??

Come on Callahan, take both hands and pull your head out of your butt!! just ask yourself one question???? can I load that model 58 with 44 special? DON"T DO IT!

I've been looking for a real treasure, I'd love to have a "New Century" with a 4" barrel and nice shiney blue, and best of all that 3rd lock on the crane and frame,, they are on another planet when it comes to money... so I dug way, way down in the very back of my gun safe, and found my old rusty, dusty, moth bedraggled 4" 29-2 with the stag grips.

Got the "Honey Badgers" brand new feather duster, and ten minutes later its shining like a new penny...Like an eager puppy it jumped in the truck for ride to the farm, I had some newer 165gr super kool "Defensive Loads",, and some 240gr lead semi wadcutters.

It hadn't been to the farm in 10 years, but looking like a doll, I loaded and fired a few cylinders of each at about 7 yards, Wow! I had forgotten just how well that thing will stack them one on top of another,,, and they stacked up in a nice little group,, so NO! a guy name "Harry Callahan" should NOT lower his sights and compromise with a 41 magnum.. when was the last time you so a stray box of those on the shelf at your local LGS??

Seriously, it's been a long time since I was proficient with the 44 magnum, nothing wrong with a model 58, it's also gorgeous, but no, you can't take it out to the farm for some casual "plinking" with some 44 specials. I have plenty of 44 magnum laying around, and I have a 5" full underlug "Classic" for that detail these days, but that 29-2 is just what Goldilocks ordered, "just right"! Billy:D:D:D

I agree, $2200 is a little high for a 29-2 that is "almost unfired", even with presentation case, documents, and tools.

When I used to get into a situation like this I had three questions that I used for guidance.

How much time and money will I spend looking for another gun like this one?
What are the chances I will find one this nice or nicer for less money?
And - Is the price differential between asking price and what I want to pay really all that important?

My usual answer to q1 and q2 was "unknown," but I always considered both of them. Answer to q3 usually called the shot, for me. I've always tended to be pretty frugal, and sometimes that has caused a few regrets. :o

Luckily, they are finally making .41 Special ammo. I love shooting this stuff these days.

For that money, I would hold out for a 4" Triple Lock in 44 Spcl fine condition.

In the 90's ammo makers offered a toned down .41 mag load lead projectile aimed at the smaller more frail police token members.

I too like the .41 magnum. I have more of these than I do .44 magnums, and the Model 58 is a great catch. I got this one from an estate sale. Seems unfired outside of the factory. I would not pay that much for a Model 29.

I am in agreement with those who suggest a package deal, if you can afford it and if the shop will go for it.

$2200 is too high, even with double paperwork. ;)

Tack on another $150-175 for sales tax, "transfer fee" if any...not a bargain.

Over the past couple of years I've had to pass on several very nice consignment revolvers that I was looking at because of the prices. The owner probably wants about $1800 for his revolver package which is fair...but when you tack on the gun shop's sales percentage it makes the price unattractive. And as murphydog says, when you add tax and fees it's really overpriced. The gun shop will usually contact the owner to see if he will reduce the price, but in this case he would have to really drop it...not likely.
