A local guy has a really nice 29-2 with 4" barrel he is wanting to trade. Could someone give me a ballpark figure as to the worth of the .44 mag? Also a birthdate? Serial is N417xxx. This is the only pic I have, but it looks near new, but does not have the original box. Thanks for any input.....

Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson shows serial numbers:
N400000 through N499999 shipped in 1977-1978.
I would guess that one was shipped in 1977.
As far as a price, I have not seen a M29-2 4" in reasonable condition for less than $650. Most are higher. Just my 2 cents.

4" N-frames seem to always go for more than the longer versions of the same model. I have a 4" M57 and I paid more for it than any other S&W..more than my 6" in the case M27. Just remember, if you let 50 bucks or so keep you from buying one you really like, you will be kicking yourself for a long time!

I think JCS&W is in the ballpark.

Thanks for the quick replies! The seller is looking to trade for a 9mm, so I offered up my near new Springfield XDm Compact Bitone 3.8 which are going for $600 at Buds. So, it should be a relatively fair trade. Wish me luck!

Best Luck. XDm are around $400 used... you will be on the winning end:p

I take it this one isn't maked 29-2E so it didn't have the "endurance" work done to it?

I would but that gun in an instant if the price was reasonable. I have been looking for a nice four inch 29-2 for awhile, just got a 29-2 8 3/8's so I need its little brother!

Nice gun, go an buy it before someone else grabs it!

The endurance features did not start until the non P&R -3's and were not in full effect until the -5/6.

To the OP, if you can make the trade do it. 4" -2's regularly trade for 750 up. I will point out it does have later style grips than what came on it.

I bought this 4", TTT, 29-2, (shipped in 1980) in 100% condition but no box or papers from Gander Mt'n for $475 +STx a couple of years ago -

Well guys, unfortunately I found the guy is a GLOCK fan and not interested in my Springfield. He also seems intent on a trade and wont commit to a cash price.

My LGS has a nickle 29-2 4" asking $750.00. Been there over a year with no takers.

The endurance package started at 29-4E (and 629-2E).

Bummer that he won't take the XD in trade but I prefer the Glock to the XD as well. Small frame Glocks with no options are selling new at my LGS for about $540. If this 29-2 is as good as you say it is (will he let you shoot it first?- That's worth a $100), I would say it's worth $540 + tax. Take him to a gun store and buy him a Glock and give that 29-2 the home it deserves.

If that's what you call a fair trade, I'm gonna start running when you approach! :D:D:D

If he'll do the trade, you got a very, very good deal.

Editted to add:
I see he will not take the XD. Go to your gun shop and trade the XD + cash in on whatever Glock he wants then trade!

PLUS TWO!!

I would be taking my auto-gun, using it in trade for the Glock of the fella's choice and be buyin' that M29-2.

A M29-2 (in good shape) for anything less than $700.00 is a good buy in my simple mind.

None of the guns he listed to trade were worth what the 29 is. In fact he even listed a Ruger LCP .380! Which is why I thought my XDm may be fair to him. The ones like mine go new for $600 at Buds, and mine has had only two mags put through it and is about as new as you can get.
To pursue this any further would require a 140 mile round trip as he lives 70 miles from me and there is no gun shop in my small town that takes trade-in guns. If he lived closer, I would consider getting a Glock to trade, but I just don't have the time to spend basically most of a day doing this.

edit: Well, he just posted this in the ad.....

"I have had a lot of people asking me for a cash price.
In its condition I would like $800 cash or 850-900 worth of stuff in trade."

He should have posted that in the first place instead of saying he wants a Glock 17, 19, 26 or 34 with no mention of cash on top of it.
