I think the primary perception of advantage for a longer sight radius may be for long range target acquisition, such as steel plate competition...“What use was the 8-3/8" barrel actually intended for? Hunting?”
I had a 8 3/8 inch 44 Magnum and a 8 3/8 inch 45 Colt. Mostly range guns for testing reloads and long distance shooting.Traded into my first 29 over the weekend and it is one of these, a 29-2 from about 1977. Guess I need to go see the movie now.

I think the 44 mag in general is mostly for hunting and self defense against bears and such.. certainly the 8” I’d imagine more for hunting.
But as I’m finding out, the other barrel lengths and finishes are and always were primarily manufactured by S&W in order to sell to accumulators and collectors like myself with OCD tendencies and get sucked into buying all of them.
Pretty sure that is going to be the vast bulk of sales for any manufacturer.
I have 29s in 3", 4", 6" and 8 3/8ths". When I go to the range to kill paper I use my 8 3/8ths". Much easier on the arthritic hand, wrist and not as noisy.
