I wonder how many 29-2 8” “Taxi Driver” sold for S&W?
I know “Dirty Harry” sold truck loads of 6.5…
Doubt Taxi Driver had quite the same effect but I’m sure it helped…

I have one just like that. Didn't connect it with Taxi Driver. Now I like it even more!

Years ago my good friend brought over his nickel Model 29-2 8-3/8" to have me clean it up before he sold it. Believe it or not, he carried this revolver around in the saddle bag of his Harley Davidson! It was in beautiful condition but it was "just too much gun" for him. He offered it to me at a great price, but I've never really been a long tube guy, so I turned him down. I polished it up and helped him get it on consignment at a local gun store- it sold in 1 day...$700. He was very happy, but I still regret not buying it from him!

“What use was the 8-3/8" barrel actually intended for? Hunting?”

I think the 44 mag in general is mostly for hunting and self defense against bears and such.. certainly the 8” I’d imagine more for hunting.
But as I’m finding out, the other barrel lengths and finishes are and always were primarily manufactured by S&W in order to sell to accumulators and collectors like myself with OCD tendencies and get sucked into buying all of them.
Pretty sure that is going to be the vast bulk of sales for any manufacturer.

Traded into my first 29 over the weekend and it is one of these, a 29-2 from about 1977. Guess I need to go see the movie now.

I had a 8 3/8 inch 44 Magnum and a 8 3/8 inch 45 Colt. Mostly range guns for testing reloads and long distance shooting.

Also if you have a Gun Safe full of S&W revolvers you should have the 8 3/8 inch ones too.

I have no idea what you're talking about. ;)

And (not pictured) an 8-3/8 Model 15-5 in .38 Special.

M-29s

I have 29s in 3", 4", 6" and 8 3/8ths". When I go to the range to kill paper I use my 8 3/8ths". Much easier on the arthritic hand, wrist and not as noisy.
